Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Analytical and Purification chemist - was given a project to work on during my 10 week internship. Based on method development and improving methods of purification on the Prep machines. Everyday running experiments, analysing data and from there discussing with my supervisors what the next steps will be and what I have observed (a lot of problem solving).

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, after the initial training period given responsibility of conducting the experiments we have spoken about and using the machines correctly (including ensuring all solvents are topped up).

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Communication in a team. Use of instruments on a daily basis. What it is like to work in industry during an extremely busy period. Learning about the latest chemistry being done in real time and the problems novel compounds can create and need for creation of new methods. Explained in detail the meaning of my work and what each of my experiments is aiming to achieve/quantify. Use of excel to present data.

A lot of support and guidance. Have 2 supervisors who are always happy to answer my questions and are a constant source of guidance everyday

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I have really enjoyed my internship. I have learnt a lot and am continuing to do so. Everyday feels exciting and am excited to discuss my findings with my supervisors and learn from them

What advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca

Always ask questions, be eager to learn, put forward your ideas, repeat back what you think you have understood to make sure this is actually the case, network and get to know what other people are doing outside of your supervisors and in the wider team and also other teams as well. Write down everything you find out and highlight what you think is significant findings so you can report this back accurately
