Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I am an Industrial Placement Student within Nationwide Building Society's Finance Emerging Talent programme, working in the Financial Planning, Business Performance & Stress Testing (FP&ST) team. In this role, I support a range of activities across financial planning, business performance reporting, governance, and stress testing, while gaining exposure to key areas of the Finance function.
Throughout my placement, I have contributed to the production of management information, reporting, and committee materials, helping teams turn complex data into clear insights for decision-making. I have also supported governance processes by coordinating committee packs, tracking actions, and producing meeting minutes and summaries.
Alongside my day-to-day responsibilities, I have been heavily involved in process improvement initiatives, using tools such as Excel, Power BI, Power Automate, SharePoint, and Copilot to automate manual processes and improve efficiency. This has included developing knowledge-sharing resources, enhancing reporting processes, and supporting colleagues through improved documentation and onboarding materials.
My role has given me the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders across Finance and the wider business, developing strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills while gaining valuable experience in financial planning, performance management, governance, and stress testing.
Overall, my placement has enabled me to make meaningful contributions to key business processes while building a broad understanding of how Finance supports decision-making across Nationwide.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

One of the aspects of my placement that I valued most was the level of responsibility I was trusted with from an early stage. Rather than simply supporting administrative tasks, I was given ownership of activities that contributed directly to key business processes across Financial Planning, Business Performance and Stress Testing.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Throughout my placement year, I have developed a wide range of technical and professional skills that have helped me grow both personally and professionally.
From a technical perspective, I have significantly improved my capability in Excel, Power BI, SharePoint, Power Automate and Microsoft Copilot, learning how to use these tools to analyse data, automate manual processes and improve team efficiency. I have gained experience creating dashboards, building automated workflows and developing knowledge-sharing resources that have delivered lasting value to the team.
I have also strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills by working on financial planning, business performance reporting and stress testing activities. Through this work, I have learned how to interpret complex information, identify key insights and communicate findings in a way that supports decision-making.
Through my involvement in committee governance activities, I have developed strong organisation, attention to detail and stakeholder management skills. Preparing committee packs, tracking actions and producing minutes required a high degree of accuracy and an understanding of how information is presented to senior audiences.
One of the most valuable skills I have developed is the ability to work independently and take ownership of my responsibilities. Throughout my placement, I have managed competing priorities, delivered work to tight deadlines and taken responsibility for projects that have had a direct impact on the wider team.
I have also improved my communication and collaboration skills by working with colleagues across different teams and levels of seniority. This has helped me build confidence in presenting ideas, asking questions, gathering requirements and working effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
Overall, my placement has helped me develop a combination of technical expertise, commercial awareness, communication skills and professional confidence that I will carry forward into the next stage of my career.
