Summer Intern - Compliance Review

I worked as a Compliance Intern within Nationwide Building Society. Throughout my internship, I supported a range of projects across compliance, conduct risk and customer outcomes. My day-to-day responsibilities included analysing customer communications, reviewing regulatory and governance documents, carrying out research, preparing presentations and briefing materials, and meeting with colleagues from different business areas to understand how compliance supports the organisation. I was also involved in projects relating to Consumer Duty, customer communications, complaints analysis and regulatory themes. The role gave me exposure to a wide variety of work and helped me develop my analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills.

I was trusted to work on several independent projects, conduct my own research, present findings to colleagues and managers, and engage directly with stakeholders from different areas of the business. While I received guidance and support when needed, I was given ownership of my work and encouraged to contribute my own ideas and recommendations.

Yes. During my internship I developed both technical and professional skills. I strengthened my analytical and research skills by reviewing regulatory documents, customer communications and business data. I also improved my presentation and report-writing skills through creating briefing papers and presenting findings to colleagues. In addition, I significantly developed my stakeholder management, communication and networking skills through collaborating with teams across the organisation. The experience gave me a much better understanding of compliance, conduct risk, Consumer Duty and how these areas support good customer outcomes.

I received an excellent level of support throughout my internship. My line manager and colleagues were always approachable, willing to answer questions and keen to help me learn. I was given clear guidance when needed, while also being encouraged to work independently and develop confidence in my own ideas. The balance of support and responsibility made the experience both enjoyable and highly valuable.

The company culture was very welcoming, supportive, and collaborative. As an intern, I felt included from the start and was encouraged to contribute to projects and share my ideas. Colleagues were approachable and always willing to help, which made it easy to learn and build relationships across different teams. I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Nationwide. The experience was both challenging and rewarding, providing exposure to meaningful work and a variety of projects across compliance and financial services. I particularly enjoyed meeting and learning from colleagues across different areas of the business, developing new skills, and contributing to work that had a real impact.
