Technology Summer Analyst - C00 Review

My role at Citi is Tech Placement Analyst, sitting within an App Development team focused on feeds, reports, and notifications. The team builds and maintains systems that handle data delivery and reporting functionality, which means the work is both technically varied and genuinely impactful.
On a day-to-day basis, I've been involved across the full stack. On the frontend, I've been working with React to build and iterate on user-facing features, while on the backend, I've contributed to core functionality such as developing an upload queue system. Beyond writing code, I've also been working within a professional engineering environment using industry-standard tools like Jenkins for CI/CD pipelines and OpenShift.

Yes, I'd say the level of responsibility has been one of the highlights of the placement so far. Rather than being given isolated tasks or shadow work, I've been trusted to own and deliver real features that form part of the team's actual product.

The placement has been a strong period of growth across both new and existing skills. On the new side, I've got hands-on experience with React for frontend development, Jenkins for CI/CD pipelines, and OpenShift for managing deployments. None of which I had meaningful exposure to before joining. I've also significantly strengthened my backend development skills through work like building the upload queue, and sharpened my use of GitHub within a real collaborative engineering team. Beyond the technical side, I've grown in confidence when it comes to tackling problems independently and delivering work to a professional standard within real deadlines.

The support I received was excellent, particularly at the start of the placement. When I joined the team, the previous developer working on the application was in the process of leaving, so I was given thorough handover guidance to get up to speed and take ownership of the work. Being thrown into that situation early on was challenging, but the knowledge transfer I received gave me a solid foundation to build from and meant I could contribute meaningfully quite quickly.

The culture at Citi has been really welcoming from the start. Everyone on the team has been friendly, down-to-earth, and approachable, which made settling into a professional environment much easier. There's never been a moment where I felt uncomfortable asking questions or reaching out for help, and that kind of open, supportive atmosphere has made a real difference to my overall experience on the placement.

I've enjoyed the placement well enough it's very much what I expected from a role in app development. The work has been engaging and consistent, and having the opportunity to contribute to real features across the stack has kept things interesting. While it's a professional environment with the day-to-day realities that come with that, the experience has been a solid and worthwhile one that has met my expectations coming in.
