Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I supported the execution of M&A and capital markets transactions by conducting company research, financial analysis, valuation work, and preparing client presentations. I worked closely with senior bankers on live deals and pitches, gaining exposure to transaction execution and strategic advisory projects across various industries.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a significant level of responsibility during my internship. In addition to supporting financial analysis and preparing client materials, I attended client meetings, joined client and internal banker calls, and participated in discussions relating to potential buyers on live transactions. This provided me with direct exposure to deal execution and client interactions, allowing me to gain a strong understanding of the M&A process and how investment bankers advise clients throughout a transaction.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes. The internship helped me develop both technical and professional skills. I strengthened my financial modelling, valuation and Excel skills, while also building a deeper understanding of investment banking and M&A processes. In addition, I improved my industry knowledge, communication skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment, significantly enhancing my time management and prioritisation skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a good level of support throughout the internship. Senior team members were approachable and provided guidance when needed, while also giving me the independence to take ownership of my work. This balance allowed me to learn quickly, build confidence, and gain meaningful exposure to live transactions, client meetings, and internal deal discussions.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture was highly professional and work-focused, with many employees working remotely. During busy periods, the workload could be very demanding, often requiring long hours, which left limited time for social activities. However, despite the intensity of the environment, colleagues were approachable and supportive, and there were opportunities to build relationships through informal conversations and coffee chats.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed the internship overall, particularly the exposure to live transactions, client meetings, and the opportunity to work alongside experienced bankers. However, it was extremely demanding, with very long working hours that often exceeded 100 hours per week. During busy periods, this left little time for anything outside of work, and sleep was often limited. Despite the intensity, it was a highly rewarding experience that accelerated my learning and professional development.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Citi to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Citi

My advice would be to prepare thoroughly for the standard investment banking interview questions, including technical concepts, valuation methods, accounting, and market-related topics. Beyond that, make sure you have a good understanding of Citi's sector teams and the areas they cover, as demonstrating genuine interest in a specific team can help you stand out. If possible, speak with current or former Citi employees before the recruitment process, as this can provide valuable insights into the firm, the culture, and what interviewers are looking for.
