Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I completed a summer internship within Citi's Corporate Banking team, covering the Healthcare, Defence and Consumer sectors. My day-to-day work spanned sector research and financial analysis: I built a comprehensive sector primer deck on the Wine, Spirits & Beer industry, covering market dynamics, premiumization trends, and key client positioning (Diageo). I also worked on debt structure analysis for clients like Haleon, contributed to acquisition financing workstreams involving multi-broker research synthesis, and produced regular market commentary tracking share prices and macro developments. I had the opportunity to work on financial models for 2 clients. The role combined deep-dive sector work with live deal support, giving me exposure to both the analytical and client-facing sides of corporate banking.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, significantly more than I expected for a summer intern. I was trusted to independently build full sector primer decks from scratch — not just populate templates, but structure the narrative, source and synthesize market data, and design the visual output. On live transactions, I worked directly with senior analyst, VP-level and MD bankers on financial models and client analysis, with my outputs reviewed and used in actual client materials rather than kept as training exercises. I also had ownership over a recurring market newsletter, which meant real accountability for accuracy and timeliness. The team treated me as a working analyst, not someone to be kept busy — mistakes had consequences and successes were recognized.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, significantly. I strengthened my financial modelling and valuation skills through debt structuring and acquisition financing work, and developed strong sector research capabilities building a full market primer from scratch. I also sharpened my ability to manage multiple live workstreams, communicate analysis clearly to senior bankers, and produce polished client-ready materials under real deadlines.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Excellent support throughout. My line manager and the wider team were genuinely invested in my development — regular check-ins, constructive feedback on my work, and always approachable when I had questions. I never felt like I was left to figure things out alone, but was also given the space to work independently and take ownership of my projects.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Citi to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Citi

Be genuinely curious about the sector, not just the deal process — asking thoughtful questions goes a long way. Take ownership of your work early; the team will give you real responsibility if you show initiative. And don't underestimate the technical preparation.
