Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Competition Law Intern at CMS, I supported the team with legal research, regulatory analysis and drafting tasks across a variety of competition and commercial law matters. I assisted with publications, market analysis, merger control projects and internal knowledge-sharing initiatives, while attending team meetings, training sessions and networking opportunities. The role provided valuable exposure to the workings of a leading international law firm and helped me develop my research, communication and commercial awareness skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received extensive support and guidance during my six weeks. As I was quite nervous about entering the legal space, coming from a science background, my mentor and the wider team were very understanding and provided me with support and feedback in completing tasks. They explained the basis of competition law and its wider application. Additionally, the emerging talents team ensured weekly catch-up calls, which were really helpful!

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

CMS has a very welcoming and diverse culture, which made it easy to settle in from day one. Everyone was approachable, supportive and willing to offer guidance, creating an inclusive environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and learning. The relationships I built with colleagues were genuine and meaningful, which not only enhanced my experience but also made integrating into the team much easier. The firm's collaborative culture and emphasis on teamwork helped me feel valued and included throughout my internship. There is so many extra-curricular activities to be involved in also (which I wish I capitalised more on)!

What advice would you give to others applying to CMS

Go for it! You do not need to have all the answers (which is what I thought I needed initially); what matters most is having enthusiasm, curiosity and a genuine willingness to learn. Although CMS is a large international firm, there is a strong sense of community and support throughout the organisation. Everyone is approachable and invested in helping you develop, which makes it easy to build relationships and feel part of the team. If you are eager to learn and make the most of the opportunities available, CMS is a great place to grow both personally and professionally!
