Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As an engineering intern I was part of a Scrum Team led by a Scrum Master alongside other interns. A typical day would have my daily stand-ups, meetings either with my team or scrum master. There would also be meetings and workshops that were set up by NatWest that we were urged to attend alongside other events.
Besides that I'm usually working on my group/individual project, or socialising with my fellow interns.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I would say 50/50. We as a group were quite self sufficient and owned our own work. There was a lot of trust that was given to us as long as we didn't overstep.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

The most important skills I've definitely developed more is communication and teamworking skills. It was my first time working on a scrum team following agile and one as big as 10 people. There was a mix of technical and non-technical backgrounds in my team so being able to accommodate for that was a great learning opportunity in its own way.
I've also learnt how to work within an agile team and see why a lot of companies do work in agile teams. We get given quite a lot of freedom, so I've been able to explore new technologies that I've never used during my time in university so that has been very good.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Everyone was very friendly and open to talking. I had multiple channels of support during my internship, from my Graduate Buddy, Scrum Master, Programme Experience Consultant and my fellow interns, so I felt very supported during my time here.
Any help and support I need I was able to message my closest contact and most of the time they were able to resolve it, if not they would then refer me to someone who can and it's been a good experience everytime.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Excellent. Everyone is very friendly and willing to talk and help out. As an intern at least it can feel daunting to talk to full-time employees, especially higher-up ones, but the opportunities I got to speak to a few of them they were very open and happy to talk to me.
Work life balance is also great, it operates on a certain level of trust so as long as you get your work done, you should be good. Just respect the others around you and they'll respect you.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I very much enjoyed it. I got to work on projects I found very interesting. I also got to talk to a lot of very interesting people, from interns to full time employees from different departments and it was really fun just to hear their experience. May have also gotten lucky with the specific cohort, but very happy with the social aspects as well as the work aspect.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group

Just be yourself as much as possible. Obviously prepare well for the interviews, but just be confident. I did terribly in the video interviews in my opinion, but things worked out.
