Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I completed my placement as an Analytical Scientist within the Tides team at AstraZeneca. My role involved supporting the analytical characterisation of oligonucleotides and peptides. On a day-to-day basis, I carried out ID and analyses, processed LC-MS and NMR data, maintained electronic laboratory records, and worked with colleagues to interpret results.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. As my confidence and experience grew, I was given increasing responsibility for independently carrying out analytical work, processing and reviewing data, and managing my own workload while ensuring work was completed accurately and in line with standard operating procedures. I also took ownership of my placement project and regularly presented my progress to the team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I developed my analytical laboratory skills by gaining experience with LC-MS, NMR and ICP-OES, while improving my problem-solving, data interpretation and scientific communication skills. I also learnt to present my findings with my colleagues by presenting in front of increasingly wide audiences with time.
