Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Transport for London?

The Mechanical Engineering Graduate Scheme at TfL is a good mixture of gaining 3 months experience at different sections of the business, completely up to you to choose where to go. The senior engineers are very knowledgeable and helpful in training you up and there is a good network of people your age to get to know.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

I enjoyed learning about railway engineering through site visits to different tracks and rolling stock, designing components through CAD, and working with people to design systems to improve work accuracy and efficiency. I enjoy the level of complexity of tasks given without stretching the competencies I have as a graduate engineer.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

All work as some level of meaning towards the business and never goes beyond your capabilities when communicated correctly.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

Benefits such as free travel oyster card and private medical benefit are extremely handy, salary is good when compared to other similar graduate roles but not enough to comfortably cover living indpendently in London.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

A lot of friendly people who are willing to help, organisational and team structure silos can make it a challenge to get certain things done due to bureaucracy.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Transport for London?

Aim to live to be able to commute comfortably to either Southwark or Stratford, as the majority of graduate work is done at these two sites.
