Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Worked in Systems management team in Logistics and Clinical Supply (which is in Biopharmaceutical Development). My role consists of working on various new automations to help the team complete work faster and more efficiently. For example, I made an automation that generates and sends a capacity planning report every week to our colleagues in Nijmegen, and also a dashboard that automatically populates weekly label jobs sent from one of our vendors.
A big project that I was tasked with was moving all clinical trial study data in my department from Excel which was currently used to a Power App, with some information being automatically populated from a control tower. I also spent time shadowing team members gaining knowledge on clinical trials, labels including how to review them, and what the systems function does to ensure the clinical trial runs smoothly.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes! I was trusted with all data, and making the new app used in my department. I was trusted with everything and treated like any other employee. At the same time my manager was great and made sure I was not overwhelmed or stressed and also had time for personal development and to improve skills, for example I attended a 4-week R Course ran by a separate company but for AZ employees.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Both! The placement is different to my degree so I learnt lots in data science, coding, clinical trials, but also got to develop soft/people skills and had lots of opportunities to do presentations/run meetings which was a great confidence boost.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Lovely, friendly, atmosphere. Everyone has a smile on their face and is happy to talk/help. There are employee resource groups (ERGs) where you can meet new people and go to events. For example AZInspire is for early talent, there are also ERGs for women & allies, LGBT, individuals with disabilities, and more!

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

A lot!! AZ is a amazing place to work for in general. Atmosphere in the office is relaxed but hardworking. Everyone is lovely, open to talk, get a coffee, offer support, etc. Always had enough work and I asked multiple times if there was anything else I could do if I had a quieter moment in the projects I was working on. I also asked to shadow members in my team and everyone was happy to teach me more and show me what else they do, a great way to get to know team members more in different countries. I went to lots of various events happening in the DISC, such as panel talks, coffee mornings, guest lecture talks, poster sessions, symposiums, summer bbq, and AI events - there is always something happening for you to learn more :)
In Cambridge there is also a free gym for employees in the hub, and they run classes during lunch and before/after work, and you can bring non-employees on weekends - in case that is of interest!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca

If there is something you don't know, be honest about it. No one is perfect and knows everything, and I feel like that is something people here really understand and always have at the forefront of their minds.
Be curious!! Show that you are willing to learn something even if you've never heard of it.
