Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Transport for London?

Overall, my experience at Transport for London has been extremely positive. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in the transport industry. Many senior leaders started on the same graduate programme and have followed a similar career path, which is both inspiring and reassuring.
Throughout the programme, I have received a great deal of support and advice from many kind and experienced colleagues. I have built strong professional connections and gained valuable insights from different perspectives, ranging from frontline operations to the wider business functions.
The two-year programme provides the opportunity to explore different areas of TfL, helping you develop a broad understanding of the organisation while shaping your own career path. It has been a fantastic learning experience and has given me the confidence to identify where my interests and strengths lie within the business.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

As a General Management Graduate, the responsibilities of the role can vary significantly depending on the placements you choose. One of the greatest benefits of the programme is the flexibility to shape your own career path by networking with teams and managers in areas that interest you.
Placements can range from operational roles within London Underground, where you may work shifts, support customers, and help improve operational performance, to project and change management roles behind the scenes, where you contribute to initiatives that deliver improvements across the organisation. These projects can range from internal business change programmes to major infrastructure developments, such as line extensions and service enhancements.
Regardless of the placement, the core responsibility is to deliver TfL's values by being caring, open and adaptable while helping provide a safe, reliable and efficient transport network for London.
The element of the role I enjoy most is working within change and project management. My placement has given me the opportunity to engage with senior leadership teams, contribute confidently in team discussions, and gain experience as an Assistant Project Manager. I enjoy the variety of the work, the opportunity to influence positive change, and the exposure to different stakeholders across the business. These experiences have helped me develop both professionally and personally while building a strong understanding of how TfL operates.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Yes, I would definitely recommend TfL to a friend. One of the main reasons is the people. Throughout my time at TfL, I have made some great friends and worked with colleagues who are incredibly supportive, friendly, and welcoming. The culture encourages collaboration, and people are always willing to share their knowledge and help you develop.
In addition to the people, TfL offers a wide range of opportunities to learn and grow. The graduate scheme allows you to explore different parts of the organisation, build valuable skills, and shape your own career path. Whether your interests are in operations, project management, or business change, there are plenty of opportunities to gain experience and make a meaningful contribution.
Overall, TfL is a fantastic place to start a career because of the supportive environment, the variety of experiences available, and the opportunity to work on projects that have a real impact on London and its communities.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5
The role matched my expectations very well. Throughout the recruitment process, TfL clearly demonstrated its values, culture, and commitment to employee development, which gave me a realistic understanding of what to expect. Since joining, I have found the experience to be consistent with what was presented during recruitment. The programme has provided excellent learning opportunities, exposure to different areas of the business, and a supportive environment, fully meeting my expectations and helping me grow both professionally and personally.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Transport for London?

My advice would be to be yourself and let your genuine personality come across throughout the application process. TfL places a strong emphasis on its values, so it is important to demonstrate how you are caring, open, and adaptable through your experiences and examples.
I would also recommend taking the time to understand TfL's vision, priorities, and the work it is currently delivering. Reading TfL's Annual Report and learning about major projects can help you gain a better understanding of the organisation and show your enthusiasm for the role.
Finally, be curious and ask questions during the recruitment and onboarding process. Showing a genuine interest in the business and the impact TfL has on London will help you stand out and determine whether the organisation is the right fit for you.
