Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Project Coordinator within Computacenter, I support the governance, financial management and delivery of a large business change programme comprising over 25 active projects. My day-to-day responsibilities include coordinating governance activities, managing programme reporting, capturing actions and decisions, reviewing and reconciling project costs across the programme, investigating and resolving financial or operational queries, and working closely with project managers and stakeholders to ensure accurate reporting and successful delivery. .

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, absolutely. Throughout my placement I was trusted with genuine responsibilities rather than purely administrative tasks. I took ownership of key programme activities, including managing the monthly financial review process, investigating and resolving financial queries, supporting programme governance, and ultimately leading delivery activities for dedicated project workstreams. As my confidence and experience grew, I progressed from providing project support to independently coordinating stakeholders, driving actions and decisions, and managing aspects of project delivery with minimal supervision

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, definitely. During my placement I developed a range of new skills while also strengthening existing ones. I significantly improved my stakeholder management and communication skills through regular engagement with Project Managers, Portfolio Leads and senior stakeholders across the ServiceNow Programme. I developed strong financial analysis and problem-solving skills by leading monthly cost reviews, investigating and resolving complex financial queries, and producing accurate reporting for senior leadership. I also built my project management and leadership skills, progressing from supporting projects to independently leading workstreams, coordinating stakeholders, driving actions to completion and facilitating delivery discussions. In addition, I gained confidence in decision-making, governance, risk management and influencing others, learning how to challenge constructively, resolve disagreements and keep conversations focused on achieving practical outcomes

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my placement, particularly during the onboarding period. One of the most valuable aspects was a detailed month-long handover from the previous placement student, which provided me with a strong understanding of the programme, key processes, stakeholders and day-to-day responsibilities. This gave me the confidence to become productive quickly and established a solid foundation for the rest of my placement. Beyond the initial handover, I received ongoing support from my manager and colleagues, who were always available to provide guidance when needed while also giving me the autonomy to take ownership of my work and develop independently.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture at Computacenter was very positive and supportive. From the start of my placement, I found people to be approachable, willing to share their knowledge, and genuinely invested in helping others develop. Despite being a placement student, I was treated as a valued member of the team and given meaningful responsibilities that contributed to real business outcomes. There was a strong emphasis on collaboration, with colleagues from different teams and business units regularly working together to solve problems and deliver projects. At the same time, I was trusted to take ownership of my work, which created an environment that encouraged both learning and personal growth. Based on my experience, the atmosphere was professional, supportive and inclusive, with a good balance between achieving results and developing people.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would say it exceeded my expectations. While the day-to-day experience of working on a large programme and being trusted with real responsibility was a major highlight, some of the most memorable aspects came from the opportunities beyond my core role. Computacenter actively encouraged networking, professional development and employee engagement, which allowed me to connect with colleagues from across the business, build my professional network and gain exposure to different areas of the organisation. I was also fortunate to have opportunities to travel internationally, which broadened my understanding of how a global organisation operates and allowed me to collaborate with colleagues outside the UK. In addition, I enjoyed taking part in Computacenter’s diversity, inclusion and culture initiatives, which demonstrated the company’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive workplace. Combined with the responsibility I was given, the people I worked with and the opportunities available outside of my immediate role, the placement was an incredibly rewarding experience both professionally and personally.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Computacenter to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Computacenter

My biggest piece of advice would be to just be yourself throughout the application process. Computacenter is a very welcoming company that genuinely values its people, so it's important to let your personality, enthusiasm and willingness to learn come across rather than trying to give the "perfect" answers. The company offers a huge amount of support and opportunities to develop, and I found that people were always approachable and willing to help. The people and culture are a big part of what makes Computacenter such a great place to work.
