Summer Intern Review

I was an intern in two separate offices, Corporate and Litigation.
Day to day, I would find work from my buddy or my supervisor and try to do that to the best of my ability. When they had nothing else for me to work on I would circle around the office to learn about what the other lawyers were doing and to help them with their tasks.
I enjoyed getting to know the people working there better over coffee; we were encouraged to ask them questions and learn about their careers. I found these one to one sessions very valuable in terms of figuring out my own path in law.

I was given a lot of responsibility. From the meticulous work involved in printing and scanning to the exploratory tasks where I would search for details about companies and compile lists for partners, to creative tasks given to me like asking me to create PowerPoints and presentations on points of law.
You get what work you seek out in general.

I have developed good office skills and skills with compiling information in an accessible format.
I have also developed soft skills such as communicating with people and reading the room - sometimes it's best if you let a lawyer finish what they are doing rather than interrupting their flow.

A lot - of course it depended on the person involved as people in this firm are often quite busy - but I found that people were very willing to give support and guidance to me.

It was a great culture - I was coming from a non-law background so I was a little apprehensive that I would be the odd-one-out but I found that DLA were actually very interested in my divergent experience and welcomed someone with a different skill set.

I have really enjoyed it - it's been full-on, and challenging, but overall I have felt energised as opposed to tired by the experience.
