Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

It is a 3.5 week Summer Internship. We first experienced a 2 day induction with all the different interns from different Offices, this involved case studies, workshops and talks, and then a shorter induction specifically for the London Office. In terms of tasks we were given, this is very practice area specific but Due Diligence, Research, Drafting, Bundling, making amendments to documents, attending client calls and taking meeting minutes tend to come up at least at some point.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

This can vary slightly from seat to seat, but in both seats I was given real current tasks for clients, such as drafting and amending documents or doing research into a specific area. Obviously, because you are not qualified someone has to review your work, but I have drafted documents on my own, just with guidance and supervision from your supervisor.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I would definitely say that my ability to interpret legislation improved in my first seat, and that during my second seat my understanding of contracts and agreements substantially improved. People are really committed to your learning and will take the time to explain something if its unclear. I would also say that my soft skills improved, like communicating professionally and workplace etiquette.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

There was plenty of support and guidance available to us. We were each assigned a trainee buddy, a supervisor (usually an associate or senior associate) and a supervising partner. The former two would be assigning most of your tasks. You are also welcome to reach out to the team to ask for work, and usually they are happy to assign you something. In terms of other kinds of support, Early Careers is really friendly and happy to answer any questions and are always available for any concerns or issues.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

It was really welcoming and friendly. People would always be open to coffee chats and such, and I had lunch with my team sometimes. There are also team specific socials that you are welcome to get involved in, and office wide drinks every 2 weeks which is fun. They held a really great pride event while I was there. They brought in a drag queen, and we got to see her performance which was really cool. It was incredibly diverse in terms of ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic background, so I did not feel out of place.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

It was really enjoyable. We had loads of socials scheduled, during the induction they rented a boat and we did a BBQ, and we also did clay pigeon shooting as another social. There is pretty much always something fun going on. They also provided us with free breakfast and lunch at the canteen, and it really helped so we didn't have to worry about bringing in lunch or cooking. Overall, a very positive experience.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend DLA Piper to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper

Ensure that you geniunely an interest in the firm and examples to demonstrate that, if you can attend an open day or a similar careers event prior to applying that would definitely help. Do not worry if you don't have any legal work experience, as I did not either and that did not matter. If you have any issues or questions, do reach out to Early Careers, they are lovely and happy to answer questions.
