Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.

The scheme was incredibly varied day-to-day. It involved the drafting of documents & cover letters, research notes, summaries of documents, flagging key terms / red flags for clients, and attending meetings.

What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?

It was incredibly beneficial getting an insight into all the teams and their practice areas. It demonstrated to me the wide range of teams I was able to train in and eventually qualify into.

It has been reiterated to me throughout the scheme that all your work must be tailored to the client and their knowledge level. This is a skill I will continue to develop once the scheme is over.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper

Make sure you've got a really strong commercial awareness. A lot of the work at the firm, particularly in a Finance or Corporate seat, is highly impacted by geopolitical news. If you can use your external knowledge to help you better understand why a client is doing something it makes the work easier to comprehend.
Nailing the basics is also essential. They're not expecting you to know the law inside out. Get what you're meant to get right.
