University Industrial Placement Student, working in a GCP laboratory context. The main role was developing and validating assays to evaluate PD biomarker fluctuation in preclinical models treated with a new drug modality. The role also included image analysis, data interpretation and presentation.

Yes, I was the main person responsible for delivering data on this project.

The placement allowed me to strengthen laboratory skills and I gained experience presenting data and interpreting experimental results. However, these areas would have benefited from more structured guidance to ensure accuracy, confidence, and deeper understanding. A large part of the placement involves preparing slides, summarising results, and communicating findings. I was new to image analysis including supervised deep learning models, and using these platforms was a tough learning curve. I would have hugely benefited from more consistent mentorship in this.

My overall experience on the placement highlighted several structural issues within the host team that significantly limited the value of the programme. I received very limited mentorship, guidance, or structured management, which made it difficult to develop confidence or clarity in my responsibilities. Training was minimal, my line manager was not involved in the project I was assigned to, and I was frequently placed in situations without adequate oversight. The wider team helped a lot, however I feel the placement would have been far more fulfilling - and I would have produced much cleaner, more efficient and better work - if I'd had focused guidance and reviews from management directly involved in the project.

My team has some wonderful, creative, generous, dedicated scientists in it. The organisation offers amazing facilities and resources, which enables a real dedication and commitment from people. My team culture, however, at times was characterised by high stress, inconsistent communication, and interpersonal tensions at leadership level. This created an environment that felt unstable, where junior staff were left unsupported or vulnerable. The strengths I list above demonstrate the potential for the placement programme to offer a very rich learning experience for students, if paired with structured guidance, and an open team culture.

There were many great things about this placement. I got to spend time in an amazing lab with great scientists; I was challenged and pushed to do things I would not have had the opportunity to do elsewhere. However, my overall experience has been unfortunately fairly negative. Organisations can sometimes assume that high autonomy is a developmental benefit for students, however without a proper foundation including clear expectations, this in reality becomes closer to neglect. I believe there should be clearer accountability for teams hosting students, defined expectations for mentorship, and a formal mechanism for programme organisers to check in with students throughout the year to ensure their development needs are being met.
