Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I sat in two different practice areas at the firm, corporate and litigation. In corporate my tasks comprised of research tasks, drafting written resolutions for directors, adding comments to marks up and attending client meetings. Whereas, my tasks in litigation comprised of attending hearings, drafting letter to Court and considering judgements.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was trusted to work on life work and make amendments to agreements. I was also trusted to attend client meetings on high value matters.

I have developed my time management skills and learning a completely new area of law (corporate) which i have no educational or practical knowledge of.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

In my corporate placement, I was provided with support and guidance as my supervisor would come over to my desk to check if I had any questions or was unsure. He would also take me to the cafe area or for a short walk around Manchester to check in. In litigation, my supervisor worked in a different office but she scheduled meetings with me to check in.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed my placement alot. Although it was very busy at time, I think having a go and getting stuck into the tasks really helped.

What advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper

I would recommend to research the firm and it's practice areas and see if you are interested in the practice areas which DLA specialism in. Although they are a full service firm, I think having a passion and interest in particular areas really shows in interviews.
