Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

In this role, I was involved in understanding how the law firm operates in some of its key practice areas including finance and corporate. On a daily basis, I would meet with members of the team and gained an insight on key trainee tasks including drafting, research and legal writing. These involved a high level of detail, organisation, time management and communication. I would also meet with other partners and lawyers in the firm to understand what they do and how their legal journey has progressed. This was also a good way to learn about other practice areas such as Intellectual Property and Technology and Employment, providing me with an understanding on the deals that they are working on.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a significant amount of responsibility to carry out my tasks, coupled with guidance and the opportunity to have any questions answered, particularly if there was anything I was unsure of.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have most certainly learned how to take a large piece of information and condense it down into meaningful and succinct work that I could present to partners in the firm.
Being able to speak with lawyers from across the firm, and also meeting a lot of interns across the UK has definitely enhanced my networking and communication skills.
Having the responsibility to carry out tasks in a timely and organised manner also increased my capacity to prioritise my work load and manage time better.
Drawing on technical skills, the internship allowed me to be curious and ask questions about the nature of the work that is carried out in a corporate law firm - I learned a lot about processes and deals, as well as learning how to improve my technology skills (including internal software and Microsoft suite).

I was allowed to be curious and ask for clarification on anything if unsure, this really made me feel supported and like a part of the team.
I approach feedback as constructive, so I asked for it when appropriate and aligned my approach and perspective with the feedback I was given.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture and general atmosphere of the firm is very inclusive, and I felt that everyone was very approachable. Being introduced to the wider cohort in London was especially memorable and I felt very cared for, motivating me to the very best work.
There are a lot of networks that I could gain insight to so I attended meetings and understood what the firm is doing to be even more inclusive, and this is done through networking and hosting events.

I thoroughly enjoyed the placement. I gained a real insight into what it takes to be a successful lawyer in an international corporate law firm and regardless of the outcome, I have gained a breadth of experience into Finance and Corporate.
The staff from reception to kitchen have been attentive and the other fee earners have showed a real interest in my background and interest in law.
