Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

On a day to day basis; I drafted advice for clients, proofread memos, attended internal meetings, delivered a presentation during a meeting, assisted partners in drafting, carried out legal research, and attended social events with teh firm including dinners, drinks, run club, yoga.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

All of my work was checked and re-checked before it was ever seen by clients, so responsibility didn't feel very high

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, i did not come to the internship with a legal background, so the learning curve has been very steep. I have developed legal research skills, drafting skills, proofreading skills and soft skills such as talking to partners, coffee chats, being personable and appropriate in an office setting.

It was very open and friendly. There was little to no hierarchy, partners engaged with everyone in the firm.

What advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper

To go into the internship aware that they will give you loads of work. Be ready to prioritise your time, plan early and be an efficient worker. There will be no twiddling your thumbs, you have to dive in and make the most of the experience. Do not get hung up on getting the training contract, just try your best every day and leave a positive impression
