University Industrial Placement Student (UIPS) Review

My role involves conducting a range of assays to help screen drug candidates and evaluate potential targets. On a day-to-day basis, this includes carrying out wet lab work using techniques such as qPCR, flow cytometry, cell culture, and ELISAs, as well as processing data and maintaining accurate lab notebook documentation. In addition to laboratory work, the role also involves contributing to team meetings, supporting cross-functional collaborations, and participating in employee resource groups.

I was given a good level of responsibility during my placement, which was dynamic in line with my experience and workload. I was given the opportunity to independently conduct assays, from design through to analysis, which helped me build confidence whilst still feeling well supported by my team.

During my placement, I applied a wide range of specialist laboratory skills that built directly on my degree knowledge whilst also expanding into new areas. I used core techniques including cell culturing, flow cytometry, ELISAs, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, qPCR, and Western blot.

I received plenty of support and guidance throughout my placement. My supervisors were always available to answer questions, provide feedback, and offer direction whenever needed, and I built a good working relationship with them over the course of the year. At the start of the placement, I was also assigned a 'buddy', which was really helpful for settling into the team and day-to-day work. In addition, there was support from a dedicated placements advisor, so I felt well supported both within the team and more broadly throughout the placement.

The company culture is diverse, collaborative, and very welcoming. People were always willing to share their knowledge and experience across different areas of the company, and that openness extended to placement students as well. This created a supportive atmosphere where it felt easy to ask questions, learn from others, and gain further insight beyond your immediate team.

I really enjoyed my placement and the wide range of opportunities that it provided. It was a valuable experience that not only helped me develop my skills and confidence, but also gave me much clearer insight into my career aspirations.
