Undergraduate Industrial Placement Student Review

As a placement student we are given an overall project within our department where we work to plan, carry out, analyse and write up lab-based experiments to try to achieve the project aims. Lab time will depend on the nature of the project and what you yourself have planned and arranged.

The project becomes very independent quite quickly in comparison to university. There is huge amounts of support to begin with - weekly 1-1 meetings with supervisor, training on workflows, techniques and equipment. Then responsibility increases to manage the project, working times, data analysis etc. There is always further support if you ask though!

Loads of new lab skills and soft skills, communication, project management and self discipline.

A lot of support and guidance initially and then support was dependant on your willingness to ask for it. Plenty of support from wider team members

Extremely high paced. Everyone was lovely and it is easily one of the nicest places I have worked at but to balance out the social opportunities, the work is high level and fast. Broad ERG resources for early careers, mental health, diversity and much more.

It was a brilliant placement and taught me a lot, but equally did come with a high level of stress to keep up pace.
