Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

This is a role in which interpersonal skills are very important as you have to communicate daily with team members as well as the suppliers. Furthermore, technical skills such as excel are extremely important in this role as it is used to track the different stages of the projects and allows you to cross check if any parts are running behind on paper work or shipping. Finally daily tasks consist of supplier calls in which information such as quotes and lead times is discussed, in addition to documenting quotes and parts etc.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, once I was confident in what was happening and understood the different roles I had to complete I was given many responsibilities which will have an impact on the projects and the company if done incorrectly, especially when documentation for costs are involved. This sounds daunting but it has increased my confidence in the role as well as making me feel that I am contributing to the workload instead of doing small jobs on the side for someone else.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

100%. I think every skill I had before has increased ten fold, in particular is my excel skills. This is from using multiple spreadsheets daily to complete any task on the multiple projects I am involved in. I thought I had good technical writing skills before starting the placement, but they were mainly focused academically. Throughout the placement I have adapted these technical writing skills in to work place appropriate skills used everyday when responding to emails and recording meeting notes.

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins

Really highlight skills that are unique to you but also relate to the role such as being a member of a sports society at university will show dedication and commitments as well as your interpersonal skills which for this role is perfect. Look at expanding your range of where you would like to live and work even if it is a bit further away from home than you are used to, it might be the best opportunity you have ever taken. Finally don't be afraid that you won't be good enough because everyone is in the same position when starting a placement and have fun.
