Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My job was very focused around data collection and analysis, we ran a couple surveys for the company throughout the year to gain insight into customer and partner experience with Softcat. My day to day varied quite a lot as it was dependent on what stage of a survey we were in.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a decent amount of responsibility, I would be asked to pull reports for various parties, and create slide decks to present the data back to the company.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have gained many skills throughout my time with Softcat, both professionally and personally. Having been given the opportunity to learn how to navigate data models, power BI, Power Query and Excel. Also due to the vibrant culture I am leaving my placement feeling significantly more confident and outspoken.

I received a lot of support and guidance from my line manager, through training, encouragement, and pushing me to step outside of my comfort zone.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Softcat is well known for its culture and I would agree that it is a very supportive and enjoyable place to work. Everyone is very open and encouraging to each other, I looked forward to going to the office everyday.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my placement overall. It has helped me grow significantly as an individual and I feel well prepared for working life after I graduate. I’ve developed skills in areas I hadn’t previously considered and broadened my perspective on potential future career paths.

What advice would you give to others applying to Softcat

Put yourself out there, you really get as much out of the experience as you put in. Take the time to speak to as many people as possible and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Softcat is a very supportive and encouraging environment, but it can feel overwhelming at times, so it’s important to remember that there are always people around to help you.
