Finance Intern Review

I was placed in the Accounts Payable team as an intern which allowed me the freedom to pick up responsibilities and tasks based on my strengths and attitude.
My main role was supporting the processes behind the Accounts Payable team and learning about the role. This involved inbox management, supplier query handling, invoice processing, statement reconciliations and bank payments. I had to learn how to operate systems like Netsuite, Nexbotix (an AI automation platform), HSBC Business Banking and Microsoft Office applications.
Outside of this I also had the opportunity to shadow other teams, network and offer myself to other teams which ended up with me taking on more tasks across the finance function.

I was given lots of opportunities to take on responsibility during my placement and I felt that managers showed faith and trust in me to give me time-critical tasks in busy business periods.

I have improved my networking, collaboration, communication and presentation skills. Having a foundation in these from academics, I found it really enjoyable to continue working and building on these.
I learnt how to operate many different systems and brushed up on my Excel skills. I learnt several new on the job technical skills that were associated with working in a system and on different platforms.

I received a good amount of support and guidance throughout the internship. At times a lack of direction and maybe management, however the actual guidance and support from peers, as well as my manager was very good and I felt very well supported by the end of my placement.

The company culture was very progressive and innovative compared to my prior understanding of corporate culture. There was a lot more freedom and autonomy given around working conditions and I found it a really warm environment to be in. A huge emphasis on fun and teamwork made it enjoyable and exciting to be part of a dynamic company.

I really enjoyed it. I was able to meet so many new people and make connections within the company and on top of that, felt that i had a real impact across my time there. Additionally, the networking opportunities and chances I was given, to gain exposure across the business, have been invaluable and will set me up nicely for my future career.
Being ina. cohort of 19 interns and working in the same office as other interns made it an even better experience as you had friends you could speak to and relate to around and outside of work.
