Project Engineering Undergraduate Review

My role in project engineering involves supporting projects at various stages, which makes each day different. I work on a range of projects that vary in scope and complexity.
My responsibilities include contributing to the planning phase by collaborating with different departments to understand project requirements and writing documentation such as project orders and change management.
I support the delivery of projects by coordinating contractor visits to gather installation cost estimates, reviewing RAMS, creating project schedules and managing project admin through attending meetings, recording minutes and raising purchase requisitions for equipment and materials.

As I became more comfortable in the role, I was given increasing responsibility and more opportunities to contribute. This included working directly with different contractors and going on site to gather information for projects.
I have also started working on my own projects, with support from my manager and team. This has helped to build my confidence and encouraged me to take on new challenges, even in situations that initially felt outside of my comfort zone.

My placement at Egger has helped me develop my soft skills significantly, particularly in communication, organisation and time management. It has also helped me become more confident and come out of my shell. In addition, I have built on my engineering knowledge and gained a better understanding of how it is applied in a real industrial environment.

When I started at Egger, I was supported by a buddy and the previous undergraduate, who helped me settle into the role. They explained the project process, assigned tasks and also gave me the independence to become familiar with the site.
I also completed an induction with each department, which helped me understand how Egger operates and provided useful contacts for future projects. My manager has been very supportive throughout, regularly checking in to see how I am progressing and whether I need any additional guidance.

Egger has a family-oriented culture, which is reflected in how friendly and welcoming everyone is on site. People regularly acknowledge each other with a ‘hello’ in passing, creating a positive and approachable atmosphere.
The company places a strong emphasis on the safety and wellbeing of its staff and is open to suggestions for improvement. There are also regular events for undergraduates and site-wide initiatives, such as summer fairs and ice cream days, which help to create a warm, inclusive and friendly working environment.

I had a very positive experience during my placement at Egger. It gave me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an industrial environment and develop my engineering knowledge. I particularly enjoyed seeing projects progress from start to finish and being able to say I contributed to them was very rewarding. The experience has also helped me think about what I might want to do in the future and has shown me how many different opportunities there are within industry.
