Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at JLR?

I would describe my experience as mixed, with both highs and lows throughout the role. A key factor is the team you’re placed in, as this can significantly shape your overall experience.
In my case, my initial team wasn’t the right fit, but I was able to transition into a team where I genuinely enjoy the work and find it engaging.
It’s also worth noting, for anyone considering the Manufacturing pathway, that there are two distinct streams: Global Manufacturing Engineering, which focuses on the implementation of future models, and Plant Manufacturing, which is centred on current production models. The specific area you’re placed into is determined by the Early Careers / Emerging Talent team, rather than personal selection.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

Throughout the grad scheme I've has multiple roles that completely differ in scope. However, two skills that I have used throughout the scheme has been problem solving and communication.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

4/5
I feel I’m given genuine opportunities to contribute meaningfully, and that my work is truly valued by my team. However, working in a large corporation does sometimes mean I feel like a small cog in a much bigger machine.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

3/5
As a graduate, the only bonus offered is a sign-on bonus. Beyond that, salary progression comes through pay rises after completing the first and second years of the scheme.
Upon leaving the scheme graduates also tend to earn towards the lower end of the salary range compared to others at a similar level within the company.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

4/5
I feel like I am being well prepared for my future career. There are plenty of development opportunities during and after the scheme.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I have developed my skills largely throughout the scheme, this is a large strength JLR has as there is so much opportunity.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

3/5
Support was mixed and largely depended on who was managing me at the time. In my current role, which I’ve chosen to roll off into, I feel well supported by my manager. However, in previous roles, there were times where I felt unsupported. The Early Careers team do what they can, but it’s clear they are a relatively small team and are not always able to provide consistent support across all areas.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
My work-life balance is excellent. I’m able to switch off at the end of the day and don’t feel the need to worry about messages or calls outside of working hours.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

3/5
This largely depends on where you are based and your preferred way of working. From my experience across both sites, Gaydon is well suited to those who prefer more remote working; however, it can make it harder to build strong relationships with your team due to limited in-person interaction. Solihull, on the other hand, is better suited to those who prefer being on-site regularly and tends to offer more opportunities to build closer working relationships with colleagues.

How would you rate JLR initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
In my view, JLR is one of the leading companies when it comes to DE&I, with a strong focus on the subject. However, there are still areas for improvement, particularly within the manufacturing environment.

How would you rate JLR CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

4/5
JLR offers 16 hours of paid volunteering leave each year for every employee, which can be used to support a wide range of community initiatives. In addition, the company has a number of ethical and environmental policies in place, demonstrating a strong commitment to CSR.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?

Yes

Why?

would recommend JLR, but not all areas equally. There are plenty of opportunities to develop and grow within the company, though experiences can vary depending on the specific team or function.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

3/5
When joining the graduate scheme, I initially expected to be placed in Global Manufacturing Engineering but was instead assigned to Plant Manufacturing. However, this ultimately proved to be a positive experience, as it led me to a team that I genuinely enjoy working with and within.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to JLR?

I’d recommend learning about JLR’s Reimagine strategy and The Creator’s Code before your interview.
