Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I completed a year-long placement as a Sales Intern (Account Manager) at Softcat, where I was responsible for managing a mix of existing customer accounts and new business opportunities within the IT services space.
On a day-to-day basis, the role is very varied and fast-paced. A typical day involves handling inbound customer queries, building and sending quotes, and working closely with internal specialists to ensure the solutions we provide are accurate and competitive. I regularly worked with vendors like Microsoft, Dell, HP and Lenovo, which meant developing a solid understanding of licensing, hardware specifications, and compatibility.
A big part of the role is customer communication – following up on quotes, chasing renewals, and making sure customers are getting the support they need. I also spent time prospecting and speaking to new customers, helping convert incoming leads into business opportunities. Alongside this, there’s a strong focus on admin and organisation, including keeping CRM systems up to date, tracking deals, and preparing handover notes.
Internally, the role is very collaborative. You work closely with technical teams, licensing specialists, and other account managers to solve more complex queries and provide the best outcome for the customer. No two days are the same, and you’re constantly learning – whether that’s new technologies, supplier processes, or sales techniques.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was responsible for managing a portfolio of customer accounts while supporting both new and existing business opportunities across a range of IT solutions. This involved handling inbound enquiries, building accurate and competitive quotes, and working closely with internal technical and specialist teams to ensure the solutions provided met customer requirements. A key responsibility was maintaining strong customer relationships through regular communication, follow-ups on quotes and renewals, and ensuring a high level of service throughout the sales cycle. I was also responsible for keeping internal systems and CRM records up to date, tracking opportunities, and supporting the progression of deals from initial enquiry through to completion. Alongside this, I contributed to prospecting activities and converting inbound leads into active opportunities, helping to drive both revenue growth and overall customer satisfaction.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

During my placement, I developed a wide range of new skills that strengthened both my professional and technical ability. I improved my communication skills through regular interaction with customers, learning how to tailor my approach depending on the situation and build strong relationships. I also developed strong organisational and time management skills by balancing multiple opportunities, quotes, and internal processes simultaneously. In addition, I gained technical knowledge across IT products and licensing, particularly within Microsoft and hardware solutions. I became more confident using CRM systems and analysing customer needs, as well as collaborating effectively with internal teams to deliver accurate and efficient solutions.

My advice would be to show genuine enthusiasm and be proactive throughout the application process.
