Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I contributed to the development, maintenance and monitoring of internal systems used across the business. Working with technologies like Python, JavaScript, React and Go to build features and improve existing functionality to provide value to our stakeholders in teams like Cyber Ops, Billing, L&D etc.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Over the course of the placement, my role progressed from supporting development tasks to independently delivering solutions, as well as contributing to infrastructure, monitoring and cross-team collaboration. I also took ownership of a project that would aid our agile delivery ceremonies so I developed an application for our team and contributed to initiatives like a highly-anticipated integration project, demonstrating increasing responsibility and trust in my work.

Members of my team and other teams are always happy to help and provide support/guidance when they can, everyone is very friendly and open to questions but independence and initiative is encouraged, especially once more settled into the placement.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Overall the general atmosphere is very welcoming and friendly, Softcat has a people first culture and it really shows from day 1. There is lots of excitement and energy in the air, people are always up for a chat and there are lots of social/networking opportunities to meet new people and have fun. There are also lots of charity initiatives and things to get involved with all year around.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

The experience was overall very positive, I was extremely nervous going into things but the culture, social events and the nature of the company made it really easy to get settled in. The amount of skills I have learnt from this experience is invaluable, in both a technical and soft skills sense.
