Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

In this role, my time has been split across three departments. Each has given an insight into a different part of the turbocharger sector of the company: looking into current released products, technologies we are looking to develop and components we are in the process of approving. I have had the opportunity to be involved in lots of testing (both physical and simulation work) and organise technical reviews of the work I have completed. I have also had more admin based tasks such as tracking parts for testing or organising parts to be shipped for testing.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes I have been given a lot of responsibility with my work. I have had multiple projects where I have organised the testing and suggested test plans, along with reviewing these results by myself to present to a team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have developed my understanding of the steps required to take a component or turbocharger from design to release, which is then applicable to all technologies. I have also learnt how to create a thoughtful technical review that covers the required technical concepts, meanwhile explaining the necessary background information to those who are not as close with the project. Being in office most days a week has allowed me to also develop soft skills, and my time management skills have improved from having a vast quantity of projects at any time. Meanwhile I have also had the chance to volunteer with a local school which has taught an entirely different skillset!

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

All of my managers have been extremely supportive and available regarding any questions or uncertainties I have had throughout my time here. All have helped to create workplans to ensure I am working on a variety of projects that will be of interest to myself and the company and help me to develop skills that I may not yet have had the chance to work on. Lots of training is available to help develop technical understanding of areas that might be of interest.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would definitely encourage others to apply to a placement here. As the site has testing, prototyping and plant facilities all onsite, it is very easy to get involved and watch over these different parts of the company which really helps with understanding of the creation and testing process which you will be organising as an engineer.

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins

Read up on the wider company before applying rather than just the sector you are applying for. Make sure to at least have a background on turbochargers and show interest in your interview!
