Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

The role sits within Logistics Operations, specifically in the Continuous Improvement team. The main focus of the role is improving warehouse processes and day-to-day operations. This can involve creating Power BI dashboards and reports, analysing data, designing and coding apps, and finding new ways to improve how the warehouse functions.
A key part of the role is digitalising paper-based processes and improving existing systems. For example, you may create an app for operators to use while picking parts, or turn a paper checklist into an automated Excel process using software such as Power Automate. You may also work on ergonomic improvement projects, such as sourcing new machinery following an injury, or redesigning a process entirely to help prevent injuries from happening again.
One of the biggest responsibilities in the role is managing the site’s Continuous Improvement Scheme. This scheme allows operators to submit ideas, concerns, or suggestions for improvement. You would be responsible for reviewing submissions, assigning actions to the leadership team, leading meetings, implementing improvements, organising engagement sessions with operators, and creating weekly KPIs and reports.
The role also involves working on a variety of cross-functional projects across the site. This means regularly collaborating with teams such as Training, HSE, and HR. Strong communication skills are important, as you will need to work with many different people and contribute confidently in meetings.
Many of the projects you work on will come directly from suggestions submitted through the Continuous Improvement Scheme. For example, someone may ask, “Why do we still fill out this form manually?” or “Can this information be added to a screen instead of printed every day?” You would then investigate the issue by speaking with team leaders and operators, develop possible solutions with support from your team, and help implement the best option. Improvement ideas and project progress are discussed weekly, with ongoing support provided throughout.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Overall, the role offers a high level of responsibility and provides opportunities to lead initiatives and projects. There is also a great deal of flexibility, allowing you to focus on projects that match your interests and strengths. For example, you could explore digital design, event planning, data analysis, newsletter creation, posters, or engagement activities.
The placement is extremely varied and gives you the opportunity to develop skills in areas you are most interested in. It is a fantastic opportunity to discover your strengths, build experience, and learn what type of work you enjoy most.
Even though you are given a lot of responsibility, the team support you fully through weekly 1:1 catch ups and two weekly team meetings to raise any concerns and discuss work load. The team offer a lot of support and emphasis the importance of a work-life balance. There is no micromanaging and you are left to work in your pace and can manage the work independently.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt code as a new skill. I have no previous experience with coding however on this placement I was taught how to create apps using PowerApps as a software. I have developed my presenting skills as I present the weekly Continuous improvement meeting to the team, this has made me able to verbalise myself clearer and get to the point. My personal confidence has also increased along with my professional career confidence.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

There are weekly 1:1s with your manager where you can discuss any issues in your private life which you're struggling with, any work load concerns or issues with projects. This is a good time to mention the direction you would like to go in with future projects or whether there is anything new you would like to try. There are two weekly team meetings (5-7 people) where you can share the work you have been doing, ask for help or voice any concerns.
There is a lot of other placement students who are based on the site so you can speak to them and discuss your experience.

The team offers excellent career advice and is happy to connect you with people in roles or career paths you are interested in, whether that is to ask questions, gain insight, or arrange shadowing opportunities.
I have not yet met anyone who has been unkind or unwilling to support my development. The company culture encourages you to learn new skills, grow professionally, and challenge yourself, while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance and avoiding unnecessary stress or overworking.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins

Although it is important to showcase your skills and previous experience, the team at Cummins places a strong emphasis on interpersonal skills during the interview process. They are often more interested in candidates who are willing to learn, communicate well, and fit positively within the team, rather than those with the most technical experience.
This is because technical skills can be taught, but qualities such as enthusiasm, adaptability, and a willingness to take on new challenges are much harder to develop. I would recommend focusing not only on your existing skills and experience, but also on demonstrating your communication, teamwork, and eagerness to learn throughout the interview process.
