Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have newly learnt some experimental skills required for a Mechanical systems engineer such as installing strain gauges, and working with accelerometers and pressure transducer calibrators as well as the data processing softwares used after gathering test data.
Skills like time-management, teamwork, report writing etc have been further developed during real-life problem solving projects.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Support and guidance was well received during my time. As much as they expected me to take on projects by myself and develop my skills, I was open to asking as many questions and support from colleagues within the team and managers. Sufficient training on each software and new skills I learnt was given before expecting me to take on the work.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was very friendly and welcoming, everyone is social and approachable to ask for help on their area of expertise. The open plan office meant collaborating and meeting new people was very easy. Even as a placement student and less experienced, I was treated the same way as anyone else and my opinions on each problem were taken as seriously.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I am enjoying it very much, my role offers me a good mix of hands-on experimental work as well as the opportunity to learn more software/analysis based work as well. The team and everyone around have been friendly and approachable to work with and different charity/student activities organised by the company have given me an opportunity to make new friendships and also network both within the organisation and outside of it.

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins

If you are willing to work hard and learn a lot during your placement and make the most use of it, Cummins has plenty of opportunities for that. Be outgoing and talk to a lot of people, not just within your team, because it is a very collaborative company and different people have very different experiences and expertise they can help you with.
