Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I work on a variety of engineering projects within the turbos business. My role includes small projects which I have complete ownership over, and larger projects which I work with one or several full time engineers on. My role often revolved around planning testing, and interoperating the results. I have also done lots of work with the in house machine shop to make parts to be used in internal testing, and customer prototype turbos.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I feel like I had lots of responsibility and i was doing work that the business needed to be done, however, there was still space around this for training and me to have some say over what areas I wanted to focus on and work on.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have improved my skills in several softwares such as Microsoft office, CAD and statistical software. I have also hugely developed my soft skills, and my understanding of efficient and effective testing and prototyping.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received lots of guidance during my placement. I feel that I always know who I could turn to for help and they were always very helpful when I did. I was also able to complete lots of training to better improve my understanding of turbos, engines and engineering more generally.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

I have really liked the company culture, I feel that it is very positive and supportive. I feel that I am given the support I need, and all my managers have been very accommodating with wfh and flexitime. There have also been several work socials throughout the year, which have been very enjoyable. I have also been able to complete 5 days of volunteering while I have worked here.

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins

make sure that you get involved in testing. All of my rotations have involved testing, however, some departments do less, and I have see some students not be able to get involved as much with the lab. if this is the case, then speak to your manager and see what can be organised, and they will be flexible and should be able to organise something for you.
