Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
I have also been exposed to site-related activities, where I observe inspections, fault investigations, and maintenance processes. This has helped me understand the importance of following health and safety procedures, interpreting technical information correctly, and ensuring minimal disruption to road users. Through this work, I am developing a stronger technical understanding of traffic signals and their role in managing traffic flow across London.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
I also enjoy working as part of a supportive team where I am encouraged to ask questions and develop my skills. The exposure to different areas of civil engineering and traffic systems has helped me confirm my interest in the industry and has increased my confidence in my role. Overall, the scheme provides a strong balance between learning, responsibility, and professional development, which I find very rewarding.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have also developed stronger health and safety awareness, particularly in relation to working near live roads and construction environments. I now have a clearer understanding of risk assessments, method statements, and the importance of following TfL and industry standards at all times.
In addition, I have improved my communication and teamwork skills by working closely with engineers, technicians, and other departments. Attending meetings, asking questions, and discussing technical issues has helped build my confidence in a professional setting. Time management and organisation are also skills I have strengthened, as I balance my day-to-day tasks with learning and development as part of the scheme.
Overall, these skills have helped me grow both technically and professionally, and they have given me a strong foundation to continue progressing within my role and the engineering industry.
