Industrial Placement Student Review

I worked across two teams to execute an optimisation and pharmacology screening project using a novel technique of transporter analysis. On a day-to-day basis, I would split my time between two labs, where I would perform cell culture and biophysical experiments.

I would say so - a certain degree of independence is expected of you after the training period, you are mostly responsible for how you structure and organise the project.

Absolutely! This kind of exposure to an industrial environment teaches you a lot! In my case, I got to discover an area of science that I previously wasn't familiar with - biophysics. This definitely broadened my horizons and introduced me to many new skills (both scientific and soft), as well as helped develop existing ones. Overall, I learned to be more independent, resilient, and analytical, had a lot of practice in scientific writing and presentations, and got exposed to many different scientific techniques!

I was lucky enough to have three supervisors. each specialising in something different! They organised bi-weekly catch up sessions so that everyone was aware of what was planned and whether anything changed at any point. They made sure to train me extensively on all of the equipment, support me during experiments when I needed it, and helped in analysing the data as well. The wider network of both of my teams was also incredibly helpful!

It was a great atmosphere! I think the company cares about their employees, especially when it comes to work-life balance. The employees also get to participate in many interesting and fun events on the side!

I enjoyed it very much! Overall, this sort of exposure is very rare at this stage, so I felt extremely fortunate to have experienced it. And it even helped me understand what I would like to do later on.
