Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role as a solicitor apprentice is similar to that of a trainee in that I rotate around the firm’s practice groups each year and within each group I assist with tasks such as legal drafting, legal research, client updates and meetings, deal negotiation and all other key elements of deals we do.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love my programme, it’s structure allows me to collate a vast amount of experience across the firm and has allowed me to start working in a competitive environment from the age of 18

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Lots of new skills including:
- negotiation
- legal drafting
- legal knowledge
- professional communication
- advocacy
And many others

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well organised I’d say. We have a clear structure on how long each rotation will last and where we will be for each rotation and also what is expected of us in those rotations.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
A good adequate level of support in line with where we are in our careers.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We receive a good level of support by way of study days and exam leave although this could be increased in line with the difficulty of the course
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I wouldn’t necessarily say my training provider has much effect on my performance in my role, I’d say my performance in my role is supplemented by the experience I have working and doing the training provided by my firm
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes we have all of the above, events, sports teams, people networks etc.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend DLA Piper to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The culture of the firm is superb, there is a perfect balance struck between friendly and professional and everyone is hard working and very available to support junior employees like myself which is incredibly valuable
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper?
Let your personality shine in the interview as opposed to being who you think they want you to be
