Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
The overview of my role as a Software Engineer at Capgemini involves the design, development, and maintenance of software solutions that solve complex problems for clients across a range of industries. On a day-to-day basis, my responsibilities include writing clean, scalable code based on client requirements, carrying out unit and integration testing to ensure everything functions reliably, and identifying and fixing any bugs or performance issues that arise. I collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including fellow engineers, architects, and stakeholders to design system architecture and deliver high-quality solutions. I am also responsible for integrating software components and third-party applications, deploying solutions to production environments, and maintaining clear documentation for the code and features I develop. Alongside this, I stay up to date with new and emerging technologies, applying them where relevant to meet client needs, and I consistently apply analytical thinking and my own judgement to solve complex engineering challenges. Overall, my role goes beyond writing code, it involves actively contributing to the digital transformation of clients businesses while continuously developing my own technical skills and expertise.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
To the greatest extent, I genuinely love my programme. Every single day feels like a dream come true, where I am constantly testing my limits and achieving things I never thought possible. What makes it even more rewarding is that I get to help people and make a real difference while doing something I am truly passionate about. Yes, some days are hard and long, but that only makes the achievements feel even more worthwhile. I am so glad I took the leap and made the decision to change careers at 38. It has without doubt been one of the best decisions of my life and I look forward to every day on this programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Since joining the programme, I have developed a wide range of both technical and personal skills that have truly transformed me as a professional. On the technical side, I have built strong foundations in software engineering, gaining hands-on experience in coding, testing, deployment, and system architecture — skills I had little to no exposure to before joining Capgemini. Alongside this, I have grown enormously on a personal level. One of the biggest challenges I have had to overcome is imposter syndrome — that feeling of not being good enough or not belonging in the room — but through the support of my team and the experiences this programme has given me, I have learned to challenge those thoughts and back myself with confidence. My communication and collaboration skills have also developed significantly, working within cross-functional teams has taught me how to express ideas clearly, listen actively, and contribute meaningfully to group goals. My confidence has grown beyond what I thought was possible, and I now approach complex problems with a level of self-belief I did not have when I started. Overall, this programme has not just taught me technical skills, it has shaped me into a more resilient, capable and confident professional, and I am excited to keep building on everything I have learned so far.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
I feel that my programme is very well organised and structured from start to finish. From day one, I was given a clear roadmap of what to expect, with defined milestones and goals that have helped me stay focused and on track throughout my journey. I have regular check ins with my manager and mentor which have been invaluable, giving me dedicated time to discuss my progress, raise any concerns, and receive constructive feedback that helps me continuously improve. The support system at Capgemini is excellent, there is always someone available to guide me whether that is a fellow engineer, a team lead, or someone from the wider business. My learning is structured in a way that builds gradually, introducing new concepts and challenges at a pace that stretches me without overwhelming me, which has been really important given that I came from a completely different career background. There are also clear expectations set around what I need to achieve at each stage of the programme, which gives me a real sense of purpose and direction. Overall I feel very supported and well guided throughout, and the structure of the programme has played a huge part in giving me the confidence and foundation I needed to thrive in this role.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
The support I receive from Capgemini is truly outstanding and is something I am incredibly grateful for. From the very beginning my manager has been approachable, encouraging and genuinely invested in my growth and development, always making time for me no matter how busy things get. My reviewer has also been a huge source of guidance, helping me navigate the challenges of transitioning into a completely new career and always being on hand to offer advice, reassurance and practical support when I need it most. Beyond my immediate team, the wider Capgemini community is incredibly welcoming and inclusive, I have never once felt like I did not belong or that my questions were not valid. There is a strong culture of openness and psychological safety which means I feel comfortable speaking up, asking for help and being honest about where I am struggling. In terms of resources, I have been given access to a wealth of learning materials, training platforms and development opportunities that have helped accelerate my growth significantly. Capgemini also takes employee wellbeing very seriously, and I have always felt like I am valued as a person and not just as an employee. Overall the level of support I have received has exceeded my expectations and has been a fundamental reason why I have been able to grow so much in such a short space of time.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
The support I receive from my training provider when working towards my qualifications has been fantastic. I receive an abundance of guidance and resources that make studying alongside a full time role much more manageable than I initially expected. One of the things I appreciate most is that I am given ample study leave throughout the year to dedicate proper time to my learning, and importantly I am actively encouraged to take it rather than it just being something that exists on paper. This has made a huge difference as it means I can approach my qualifications with focus and commitment without feeling guilty for stepping away from day to day work. My training provider is always responsive and helpful, whether that is answering questions, providing additional materials or simply offering reassurance when the pressure of studying feels overwhelming. There is a genuine understanding that working towards qualifications whilst being in a full time role is challenging, and that recognition alone makes a big difference. Overall I feel very well supported in my journey towards achieving my qualifications and I am confident that with the continued support of both my training provider and Capgemini I will reach my goals.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I feel that my qualification has had a really significant and positive impact on my ability to perform in my role. The knowledge and understanding I gain through my studies directly translates into my day to day work, and I am constantly finding myself drawing on what I have learned in my training when tackling real world challenges on the job. For example, the theoretical concepts I study around software engineering principles, system design and programming have given me a much deeper understanding of why we do things the way we do at Capgemini, rather than just following processes without truly understanding them. This deeper understanding has made me a more confident and effective engineer. My qualification has also helped me approach problem solving in a much more structured and analytical way, which has been hugely beneficial when working through complex technical challenges with my team. There are regularly moments where something I have studied clicks into place in a real work scenario and that feeling is incredibly rewarding. It also gives me a great sense of credibility and confidence knowing that the work I am doing is being recognised and validated through a formal qualification. Overall I genuinely feel that my qualification and my role complement each other brilliantly, and together they are shaping me into a well rounded and capable software engineer.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Capgemini offers a wealth of extra-curricular activities and initiatives that go far beyond just the day to day work, and I have thrown myself into as many of them as possible. One of the things I am most passionate about is helping and encouraging other people, particularly those who may feel like it is too late to change their lives or pursue their dreams. Being someone who made a career change at 38 I feel a real sense of responsibility to show others that it is absolutely possible and that age is never a barrier to achieving something incredible. I actively get involved in initiatives at Capgemini that allow me to share my story, mentor and inspire others, and champion diversity and inclusion within the technology industry. This passion and dedication has been recognised in ways that I am incredibly proud of. I was named Degree Apprentice of the Year two years running, which was a truly humbling experience and something I never imagined possible when I first started this journey. More recently I have been nominated for three categories in the Women in Tech Excellence Awards 2026, which is one of the most prestigious external recognition programmes in the industry. To be nominated once would have been an honour, but three categories is beyond anything I could have dreamed of. Overall the extra-curricular opportunities at Capgemini have allowed me to grow not just as an engineer but as a person, and I am so proud of everything I have been able to achieve and contribute so far.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Capgemini to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend Capgemini to a friend without a single moment of hesitation. In my experience Capgemini is so much more than just a place to work, it is a place where you are genuinely valued, supported and encouraged to be the very best version of yourself. The culture is unlike anything I have ever experienced in my working life, it is inclusive, diverse and welcoming, and from the moment I joined I felt like I truly belonged. The opportunities available at Capgemini are endless, whether you are a school leaver, a fresh graduate or someone like me who completely changed careers later in life, there is a place for everyone here and the organisation genuinely invests in helping you grow and succeed. The support network is second to none, from managers and reviewers to colleagues and wider community groups, there is always someone in your corner cheering you on. Beyond the professional opportunities, Capgemini has a real human side to it, the wellbeing of employees is taken seriously and there is a strong sense of community and camaraderie that makes coming to work something to look forward to. For anyone who is sitting on the fence about whether to take the leap, whether that is into a new career, a new industry or an apprenticeship programme, I would say do not hesitate. Capgemini changed my life and I have absolutely no doubt it could change yours too.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Capgemini?

My biggest piece of advice to anyone applying to Capgemini is simply this, back yourself and go for it. Do not let self doubt or fear hold you back because Capgemini is not just looking for people who tick every single technical box, they are looking for people with passion, drive, curiosity and a genuine desire to learn and grow. Be authentic in your application and interview, do not try to be who you think they want you to see, let them see the real you because that is exactly what makes you stand out. Do your research on the company, understand their values, their culture and the kind of work they do, and think about how your own experiences and skills align with that, even if those experiences come from a completely different industry. Do not be afraid to talk about your journey, your challenges and what has brought you to this point because your story matters and it is more powerful than you think. For anyone who is older or considering a career change, please do not let age or a lack of traditional tech experience put you off, I am living proof that it is never too late to start again and that Capgemini will embrace you for everything you bring to the table. Prepare well, be honest, be enthusiastic and above all believe in yourself because if you get the opportunity to join this organisation it will be one of the best decisions you ever make. It certainly was for me.
