Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a Paralegal within the Court of Protection Team, supporting in the management of vulnerable client's property and financial affairs as they lack capacity to manage this themselves. I maintain direct contact with clients, families, care teams and case management, and external bodies. I ensure our client's financials are maintained in their best interests. In addition to my caseload, I provide mentorship and guidance to colleagues within my team to promote collaborative working practices, share knowledge and best practice and provide a supportive team environment.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have enjoyed learning on this programme alongside my role, however, at times the balance to manage the different tasks has been difficult.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I did learn some really helpful information and skills pertaining to dispute resolution and summary judgments. This learning aligned with live tasks linked to this issue, so proved to be really helpful and great timing.

Access to support was really good, both from my learning coach and my employer.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer was invaluable throughout my apprenticeship process, if I was having any issues in getting information from my coach/BPP, my employer was able to escalate this through their own channels and contacts and get the information I needed for me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Getting immediate/quick responses from my coach was not always achieved, which did cause some stress/anxiety.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I'm hopeful that in completing my qualification, this will support my career development, strengthening my legal knowledge and understanding. I feel it shows to my employer that I am committed to my employer, my department and my role and that I have a strong desire to further progress personally and professionally.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have regular social events, monthly team meetings and annual Court of Protection best practice days with other IM offices.

Why?
I am a huge advocate for Irwin Mitchell as an employer. I have worked at IM for over 21 years and feel I have always been supported within my roles and encouraged to progress within the organisation. If a career in law is what someone wishes to attain, IM is the employer for you. There are lots of career progressing opportunities and recognition for peoples efforts.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell?
I'd suggest coming with a desire to do well and progress. There is great recognition for the colleagues who work hard and achieve good results for the business. Being a team player is essential and being able to work collaboratively with colleagues. If applying for a role within a particular department, do research into what services that department provides and ask questions, this shows engagement and genuine inquisitiveness to the role and expectations.
