Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Carrying out maintenance activities such as fixing robots and conveyors. Get to look into programming and modding different PLC brands. Additionally, I get to look at fixing things before they break as a form of preventative maintenance. I carry out teamwork and communication skill on a day to day basis. Very physical job but I also get to create plans when breakdowns occur to try and fist them as much as as possible.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
This has been the best programme I could imagine. I have made lots of new friends in work from networking and I feel I can ask anyone for help. The job has been hands on with little written work which is exactly what I was looking for. My mind is always working hard and I need to be on my toes to react to breakdowns and come up with plans when there is shutdowns on.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned a very large array of skills since starting this apprenticeship even though I am only in the second year. I have learned mechanical skills such as how to use hand tools and power tools. Some of these include drills, hammers, saws and grinders. I have also learned some electrical skills such as hard wiring and programming online. I have used multimeters to test the wiring I have carried out. I have used several plc brands inside work.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The work carried out in placements in the factory in Halewood is very good and has a plan set in place. Sometimes due to breakdowns or other unforeseen circumstances, the plan is not stuck to but the maintenance team in work always finds an activity for the apprentices. However, the college is not as organised as this. It has great tutors who allow you to clearly understand subjects but the management side of things is poor. Teachers are unsure what units they are supposed to be teaching and unsure which class to have. This isn’t down to the tutors but poor management.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The workers inside JLR are always willing to help the apprentices out with any needs we have. If there is ever a time I need help with college work, the maintenance team is willing to help me with it. Additionally, the supervisor is helpful with me if I ever have any additional questions.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have received lots of help from the college and specially the ITM who works for NWTC. They have been helpful with talking us through how all the knowledge questions and job reports will work. Additionally, JLR has invited several tutors into the factory so that they have an understanding of what is going on. This means that they can make more references to the factory and help us as best as they can.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel as though the majority of the subjects learned for the qualification help towards the work carried out in the factory however some are less useful than others. Some of the best subjects that I have been able to directly apply to my role are electrical principles and health and safety. Additional subjects like communications have been able to help me work in a team better and even help me when it comes to emailing my supervisor. However some subjects such as lean manufacturing isn’t particularly useful for my role because although I have an apprenticeship for JLRs principles, I do feel as this subject would be more useful if I was working on the line opposed to where I am working now on the maintenance team.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I have been to several activities outside of JLR such as being a STEM ambassador and helping out with several events in the local area such as try before you apply events and even carrying out presentations in a local school. These activity’s have been great to improve my CV and also help me to look better within JLR. I have also been invited to play football at a local pitch every week with my shift after work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think if someone wants a great hands on experience along side a great time of people then JLR is the right choice to work for. It is very well organised and there is plenty of opportunities outside and within the company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
I would make sure that anyone applying for JLR has learned the creators code inside and out. Try to make sure to have an example for everyone of the creators codes to show when you’ve shown it. Additionally, make sure to revise for the aptitude tests before carrying them out.
