Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I provide administrative support to the Transport Department, helping to ensure the smooth day‑to‑day operation of transport services. My role includes managing correspondence, maintaining accurate records and databases, processing invoices and orders, and supporting transport officers with reporting and scheduling. I act as a key point of contact for internal teams, contractors, and the public, ensuring enquiries are handled efficiently and in line with council procedures. I work in a fast‑paced environment, prioritising workloads effectively while maintaining a high level of accuracy and confidentiality.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy my programme overall, particularly the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop my skills within a real working environment. However, there are some aspects that I find challenging, such as balancing workload demands and occasional repetition in tasks, which can affect my enjoyment at times. Despite this, I recognise the value of the programme for my personal and professional development and remain motivated to continue learning and improving.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt new skills and further developed existing ones throughout my apprenticeship. In particular, I have improved my administrative, organisational, and communication skills, as well as my confidence in using council systems and handling transport-related processes. I have also gained a better understanding of working within a local authority and managing tasks in a busy environment. While I am still developing and building experience, I feel the programme has had a strong positive impact on my skills and professional growth.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is generally well organised and structured, with clear expectations, regular support, and a good balance between work-based learning and development activities. I usually understand what is required of me and where to access guidance when needed. At times, there can be competing priorities or changes that affect structure slightly, but overall the programme is well managed and supports my learning effectively.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I receive a reasonable level of support from my employer, particularly when guidance is requested and for day‑to‑day operational tasks. Managers and colleagues are generally approachable and willing to help. However, there are times when support can be limited due to workload pressures or availability, which can make it more challenging to access timely feedback or direction. Overall, the support is adequate, but there is room for more consistent and proactive support to enhance my development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. They provide clear guidance on requirements, regular check‑ins, and helpful feedback on my progress. Support is accessible when needed, and communication is generally clear and timely. While there is always scope for even more tailored support at times, overall the provider supports my learning effectively and helps me stay on track with my objectives.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualification through the training provider helps me perform better in my role by reinforcing relevant knowledge and providing a clearer understanding of best practice within an administrative and organisational setting. The learning links well to my day‑to‑day responsibilities and has helped me improve my confidence, efficiency, and professionalism at work. While some elements are more theoretical and not always immediately applicable, overall the qualification has a positive impact on my performance and development in the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There are limited extra‑curricular activities available to get involved in at work. While there may be occasional informal social or professional opportunities, these are not widely promoted or regularly accessible. Due to workload, time constraints, or limited organised activities, engagement outside of core job responsibilities feels minimal. As a result, opportunities for social interaction or wider networking within the organisation are fairly limited.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Calderdale Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend Calderdale Council to a friend as it offers a supportive working environment with opportunities to gain valuable experience and develop skills, particularly within local authority services. The organisation promotes professionalism, learning, and teamwork, and provides a good foundation for personal and career development.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Calderdale Council?
My main advice would be to take time with your application and really read the job description and person specification carefully. I found it helpful to tailor my answers to the role and use clear examples from my own experience rather than keeping things too general. Showing that you understand the importance of public service and how your role contributes to the local community is also really important.
I would also say that having a positive attitude and being open to learning goes a long way. Calderdale Council values organisation, communication, and teamwork, especially in busy departments, so highlighting these skills makes a difference. At interview, don’t be afraid to ask questions and show genuine interest in the role and the organisation as a whole.
