Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
overview: I travel to different customer business sites, I install IP phones, hub routers, Wi-Fi extenders, cisco routers + AccessPoints, switches, firewalls, occasionally run cabelling as well as installing I also go out to different customer sites for faults, to diagnose and fix. Configuring routers and working with remote teams to get kit commissioned and live. I speak and listen to customers, to understand the problems they are having and how I can resolve it.
I get my own work van with fuel card, which makes it easy to travel to different sites.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
It is a flexible job, during my apprenticeship I started off by shadowing other engineers and slowly started doing jobs by myself when I could. I had one dedicated study day per week, which I got to choose. I would complete courses, coursework for my apprenticeship and for BT (their company courses). Every few months I would go away to complete my firebrand training and to do tests, it was a few days at a time and for the last course and test we only stayed a one night, course on arrival and then test the next day.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
I have learnt how to speak to customers and people better in general, I have also picked up IT skills on how to work my way around a laptop quicker and more efficient, even though I had decent knowledge of IT already as I did it at A-level. I also learnt a lot about a networks infrastructure and how everything is connected within a work place, I also changed a few things at home that made life easier.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The apprenticeship is well structured overall, with a clear framework covering on-the-job learning, training blocks, and portfolio evidence. The balance between practical work at BT and the formal learning through Firebrand works well, and expectations are clearly set. Occasionally timelines or evidence requirements can feel slightly unclear, but with support this is usually resolved quickly. Overall, the program is organised and supports steady progression.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
BT provides excellent support throughout the apprenticeship. Line managers, colleagues, and wider teams are always approachable and willing to help, whether it’s technical guidance, on-site support, or guidance around evidence and progression. I’ve been given real responsibility, valuable hands-on experience, and the time needed to complete apprenticeship work alongside my role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
Firebrand provide strong support throughout the qualification. Tutors are knowledgeable, responsive, and clearly experienced in the subject matter. They offer useful guidance on assignments, EPA preparation, and portfolio evidence, and are quick to answer questions or provide clarification when needed. The training sessions are engaging and directly linked to real-world scenarios.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
The qualification has been very relevant to my role and has helped reinforce both technical knowledge and best practices, particularly around networking concepts, troubleshooting, and structured working methods. Some learning naturally overlaps with existing on-the-job experience, but overall it strengthens understanding and confidence when working in real customer environments

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

3/5
There are some opportunities to get involved in additional activities, such as wider team engagement and professional development events, but these can vary depending on location and workload. While the focus is strongly on core role responsibilities and learning, more consistent extra-curricular or networking opportunities would be a welcome addition.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend BT Group because it offers strong support, real hands-on experience, and clear opportunities to develop technical and professional skills. As an apprentice, I’ve been trusted with real work, supported by experienced engineers, and given access to a wide range of technologies and environments. The combination of structured learning and on-the-job experience has helped me grow in confidence and capability.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?

Be proactive and open to learning as much as possible. Ask questions, take notes, and make the most of the experience you gain on site and from colleagues. Managing your time well between work, training, and portfolio evidence is important, and staying organised early on really helps. Showing a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and good communication skills goes a long way at BT.
