Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
As an apprentice we support the commercial team on construction projects by helping to manage costs, review contracts, track spending, and assisting with payments to subcontractors etc. I work on site and in the office while learning from experienced staff.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
The apprenticeship is enjoyable and the team you work with are supportive, knowledgeable and understanding. They provide a good base for the start of your career and no question is too much. It is important to understand that they are not there to babysit you and the apprentice must take responsibility when it comes to getting their work done including any college work they need to complete.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Loads of skills including communication, problem solving, logical thinking, computer skills, maths, analytical skills etc

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
There are some aspects of the programme that feel outdated or confusing. This is a common issue/feeling among the apprentices. Most of them are sorted but it can feel slow or clunky at times. For the most part it is well put together and is a good way of learning real on the job experience whilst still getting a degree and certificates at the end of it.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
It can depend on managers but for the most part we are well supported by the early career teams, high ups in management and our line managers too. With the creation of a new hub on teams we're able to ask questions and discuss topics with our fellow apprentices and graduates making it easy to communicate with people who may have already been in your position.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
For me personally I have received great support from LCB in regards to working towards my qualifications. We have regular meetings where we discuss what we need to look at doing in the future. This approach allows us to focus in on the specific aspects that we need to work on or gain experience in.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
Sometimes the qualification has parts of it that are simply not related to our role. It can be hard to connect the dots in certain areas as they are simply something we would never have to cover working in our role. Other bits are far more useful and directly applicable to the role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
Some sites have team-building exercises more than others however in general the team get on well outside of work, there would likely be Christmas social, summer social and general professional network opportunities that we are welcome to join.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Despite our insufficient pay the opportunities for apprenticeships in this field are limited and the experience is good. As an apprentice we gain valuable hands-on skills where you begin learning from day one. We are given real responsibility and this encourages us to be focused, logical and sure of our work. It quickly improves a variety of skills and provides a good base for the start of our career.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?

Be honest in what you want to get out the apprenticeship, ensure you know bam's values as they play a part in how we work everyday.
