Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work as a Apprentice Temporary Traffic Management Designer, supporting the planning and design of safe and compliant traffic management solutions for highway and street works. My role focuses on developing my technical competence while assisting experienced designers and project teams to ensure works can be delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with industry standards.
On a day-to-day basis, I assist in the production of traffic management drawings and layouts, creating designs for road closures, lane restrictions, temporary traffic signals, and pedestrian management. This involves reviewing site information such as speed limits, road geometry, traffic flows, and environmental constraints, while ensuring designs comply with relevant standards including the Traffic Signs Manual and Safety at Street Works and Road Works (Red Book).
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my programme to a high extent, as it provides a strong balance between structured learning and hands-on, real‑world experience. The combination of technical training and involvement in live projects has helped me to steadily build confidence, competence, and understanding of my role.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Throughout my programme, I have developed a broad range of technical, professional, and interpersonal skills, supported by both structured learning and practical experience on live projects.
From a technical perspective, I have strengthened my ability to produce and interpret temporary traffic management designs, applying relevant standards such as the Traffic Signs Manual and the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice. I have developed confidence using design software, reviewing site information, and identifying constraints and risks to ensure designs are safe, compliant, and practical for site implementation. I have also improved my attention to detail through checking, amending, and reissuing drawings in response to feedback.
My problem‑solving and analytical skills have developed through exposure to a wide variety of sites and design challenges, requiring me to think critically about traffic flows, pedestrian safety, and environmental considerations.
I have also made strong progress in communication and teamwork, working closely with senior designers, project managers, supervisors, and other stakeholders. This includes responding to design queries, incorporating feedback effectively, and ensuring information is communicated clearly and professionally.
In addition, I have developed important organisational and time‑management skills, balancing design work, training requirements, and deadlines across multiple projects. I take ownership of my learning, actively seek feedback, and apply it to continuously improve my performance.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is well organised and structured, with a clear balance between on‑the‑job experience, training, and ongoing development. Expectations are set out clearly, and I understand how my day‑to‑day work links to my wider learning objectives and progression within the role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer throughout my programme. There is consistent guidance from managers, mentors, and experienced colleagues, which has helped me to develop confidence and progress effectively in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider, which has been helpful in guiding my learning and progression throughout the programme. They provide clear structure around learning requirements, assessments, and evidence gathering, ensuring I understand what is expected at each stage.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that my qualification is not directly aligned with my day‑to‑day role, however it is closely related and complementary. While it does not always map exactly to the specific tasks I undertake in my role, it provides a useful foundation that supports my overall understanding of the industry.
The qualification helps develop core skills such as safety awareness, problem‑solving, planning, and professional practice, which I am able to apply to my role in a practical way. It also reinforces broader principles and knowledge that are relevant to traffic management and engineering work, even if they are not always specific to the designs I produce on a daily basis.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are extra‑curricular activities available within the business, supported by a dedicated welfare team. The welfare team plays an active role in organising company events, social activities, and team nights out, which helps to promote positive wellbeing, team engagement, and a strong sense of community within the workplace.
