Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I work with the pavement team. Even though I never thought of it before I think it is alright but sometimes it is hard to get taught as the team is very very busy so I feel like I learn things slower than I would like to. I do have a buddy but he also has his work to do so I think that there needs to be improvement for mentoring apprentices
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I definitely enjoy the apprenticeship overall. I am really grateful and happy to work with Jacobs. However, I am definitely looking to rotate into building environment team as my long term career goal is to be a project manager for that team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I definitely learned a lot of things especially because pavement engineering is something new for me. However, I do think that the pace is quite slow and that 1-1 training or something like that would benefit an apprentice way more

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
I haven’t received a structure to follow yet. Everything that I learned was a bit random depending on what stage the engineer that showed me how to do something was working on
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
It depends on how busy my team gets sometimes it would be really hard for someone to help but there is definitely someone that is willing to help another time
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
There’s not really much support with that. We don’t get any mentoring or “study leave” so all the coursework has to be done after work or weekends even revising which is definitely hard to balance
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
So far I didn’t have any modules related to pavement engineering
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are lots

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Jacobs to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall, I think Jacobs is an amazing company with great benefits and an okay balance with work and personal life but being an apprentice is hard and definitely requires more structure.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Jacobs?
Willing to learn more, adaptive skills, organisation skills, confidence and integrity
