Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My daily tasks can vary drastically depending on project timelines and volume of work. I have written reports on scour assessments, assisted with community engagement projects, drafted health and safety documents, completed height estimation calculations as well as completing some asset inspections.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme is good and my team is great but it is difficult to complete work you have limited knowledge on. And in a busy environment sometimes you can feel pressure to complete tasks without asking too many questions.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have definitely developed my communication skills and understanding of weirs, scours and hydraulic structures. I have also learnt a lot about the corporate environment and how health and safety is at the centre of a lot of work and projects.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The university course is well structured but within my team in Jacobs I am the first apprentice therefore I do think there was some uncertainty around how much and what work I should be tasked with.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I do feel like I feel comfortable within my team to ask for help and to be supported. However I do think this is due to the individuals nature therefore not necessarily going to be true throughout the whole company.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I do feel like I am listened to by my colleagues and they understand when I have a lot of coursework and will give tasks accordingly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The university course does correspond to my work a little however I do think this may be because the course has to cover such a wide range of topics and that only one or two modules will directly correlate to my line of work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There is opportunities to do so, there is a women’s volleyball team, there is a pub outing every Thursday, some of the employees are doing a half marathon. However personally I do not engage that much due to have commitments outside of work that take up most of my free time.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Jacobs to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend due to the good work culture and friendly environment but I would caveat the type of work and ensure they understood what the job entails.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Jacobs?
Be organised and manage your tasks systematically, start as you mean to go on and try to be proactive when you have spare time.
