Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I am a Trainee Quantity Surveyor supporting the commercial and financial management of construction projects. My day-to-day role involves assisting with cost monitoring, valuations, and maintaining project documentation. I work closely with the commercial and site teams to ensure accurate reporting of progress and costs. This includes supporting subcontractor management, reviewing applications for payment, and helping track changes to the project. I also contribute to general project coordination and communication between stakeholders. The role provides a balance of office-based and site-based experience, helping me develop an understanding of cost control, contracts, and project delivery.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I enjoy my programme to a strong extent, as it provides a balance of practical experience and structured learning. Being involved in real projects builds confidence and understanding. While it can be challenging at times, this pushes development and makes the experience more rewarding overall.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
I have developed both new and existing skills, particularly in cost management, communication, and organisation. I’ve improved my ability to analyse financial data, manage project documentation, and liaise with stakeholders. I’ve also strengthened my understanding of contracts and commercial processes within a live construction environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The programme is generally well organised, with a clear balance between work-based experience and structured learning through my training provider. Key milestones and support are in place, although at times the workload between project responsibilities and academic commitments can be challenging to manage. Overall, it provides a solid framework for development.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer, particularly from my line manager and wider commercial team. There is regular guidance on tasks and opportunities to ask questions. While independence is encouraged, support is available when needed, helping me develop confidence and competence in my role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
I receive a good level of support from my training provider through structured lessons, accessible tutors, and clear guidance on assignments. There are regular check-ins to track progress and address any issues. While independent study is required, support is available when needed to help maintain steady progression.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
My qualification supports my role by building a strong theoretical understanding of key commercial and construction principles. While not all content applies directly to daily tasks, it strengthens my knowledge of contracts, cost management, and processes, which improves my confidence and decision-making over time.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

3/5
There are opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities, including social events, team-building activities, and occasional networking opportunities. These provide a chance to connect with colleagues outside of day-to-day work and build relationships across the business, contributing to a more positive and collaborative working environment.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAM to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend BAM to a friend, particularly for those looking to gain practical experience alongside their studies. The programme offers strong exposure to real projects and supportive teams. While it can be demanding at times, it provides a solid foundation for building a career in the construction industry.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?

Focus on demonstrating genuine interest in construction and an understanding of the role rather than just the brand. Be prepared to give examples of teamwork, problem-solving, and times you’ve taken responsibility. Show that you’re willing to learn and can handle a structured but demanding environment. Strong communication and a practical mindset go a long way in the application process.
