Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I work in Secure Contracts Digital at BT Group so I am limited to what I can disclose but it essentially involves creating applications that maintain and monitor the contracts we work on. It is interesting but does have it's restrictions due to the nature of the work being secure and lots of protocols being followed day-to-day.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

3/5
The actual apprenticeship in Adastral has worked for me and I have learnt a lot but the apprenticeship community is pretty small and social/network opportunities are limited due to the location so London or Manchester may be a better opportunity. I do enjoy working with the people I work with, most are very supportive, but there are a few who can make it difficult. However this comes with every work place and I think is something it is good to get exposed to. We get treated like adults and given responsibility which is also nice.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
I have done alot of self-learning from resources online etc to learn python, C++ and Typsecript. I get a lot of exposure to the development life cyle and agile methodologies. My confidence has grown so much aswell.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

3/5
The structure started with rotations so we spent 6 months in different teams in our area to get exposure in networks, infrastructure, software, project management etc. It now has moved into assimilation focus where you pick the area you liked best which for me is software. This has been useful, however I do feel the rotations should be voluntary in that you can rotate if you do not know what you want to do or if you have a passion, you can specialise in that area. Making rotations mandatory can actually limit the skills and knowledge we build that mean the most to our career path.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
My manager and our senior manager are both supportive.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

2/5
UOS is not a university I recommend based on my experience. Only a handful of modules have been taught to us, the rest we have self-taught the content due to lecturers not showing up, or not knowing it well enough. I have had to miss an entire module due to a lecturer bullying myself and peers, goading reactions and making inappropriate comments. The Uni did raise this and apologise but did not remove the staff member from the situation so I don't really know if it was handled correctly. In general it is a free degree but I dont think I would go with UOS if I was paying.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
Some of the UOS content is also outdated, so we learn mostly off of the people we work with instead of transferring it directly. Apprenticeships are great as we do get so much support from those we work with.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

1/5
Only ones that I organise with another apprentice but they are self-funded and rare.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?

Yes

Why?

It is great learning on the job and off of experts in the field that interests you.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?

Apply for London and bigger city locations that are better-work-place policy. Apply yourself to everything and say yes to opportunities even if you are outside of your comfort zone. Learn outside the job too and find hobbies that help maintain all the information you are plugging in day-to-day.
