Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
I was made to feel like I was fulfilling a junior designer role on the homeware team. This involved being in the design team meetings, carrying out print and pattern research, competitor research, getting print and pattern briefs and designing prints for Matalan’s A/W22 homeware collection.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
This placement at Matalan has taught me so much about the commercial homeware design industry. I learnt about all the design roles within their homeware team and it was really insightful and helpful learning about the roles available in their company.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was extremely friendly and inclusive. I wasn’t made to feel like a spare part and they gave me jobs that were important to do! I felt like their interns were treated really well.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I have thoroughly enjoyed the placement, so much so that I have been offered to return for some more time before starting uni and I am definitely going to go back.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Matalan
To get this placement I applied to their 12 months print design year in industry role on the homeware team. I was unsuccessful in getting this role but I came a very close second so they offered me this 3 week experience. I couldn’t recommend applying to the 12 month role enough if you are a student because I’m going back for some more weeks with them and it’s paid this time!
