Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Talent Acquisition Consultant at the John Lewis Partnership, I am the responsible for the recruitment for our digital estates. My role is inherently strategic; I act as a trusted advisor to Engineering, Architecture, Infosec, Data and Product leads, ensuring our hiring plans align with the long-term technical roadmap for the Partnership. I don't just find candidates; I identify the future owners of our business.
My day-to-day involves deep-market mapping and proactive headhunting within the highly competitive tech landscape. I specialise in articulating our digital transformation story—moving beyond our retail heritage to showcase our modern tech stack and microservices architecture. By engaging with passive talent, I build high-quality pipelines of engineers who value the autonomy and purpose found within our unique co-owned model.
I take full ownership of the candidate journey, ensuring a frictionless and inclusive experience that mirrors our brand values. From refining candidate experience to negotiating complex offers, I manage every detail. My focus is on securing top-tier digital talent who will thrive in a democratic environment, ensuring the Partnership remains at the forefront of retail innovation.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
My experience on this apprenticeship has been profoundly rewarding, offering a comprehensive journey from foundational prompt engineering to complex AI concepts. Every module, underpinned by engaging real-life case studies from different organisations, has proven consistently intriguing. Mastering frameworks like CRAAP and CIA, alongside Agile methodologies and data management, has equipped me with a robust technical toolkit that I apply daily to enhance our internal operations.
The programme’s impact extends far beyond the classroom, empowering me to engage directly with the leadership team to showcase my development. I have successfully influenced key stakeholders, improved the candidate experience, conducted training sessions to colleagues, and provided critical benchmarking for HRMS integrations. Furthermore, my ability to identify and highlight security risks within proposed frameworks has added tangible value to our governance and risk management protocols within our squad.
The sheer volume of knowledge gained is immense, but the true highlight is the vibrant apprenticeship community - Technical Coach, Cohort Coach and Colleagues. This environment fosters exceptional engagement and knowledge sharing, ensuring I feel supported as both a learner and a Partner. It has been a brilliant catalyst for professional growth, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to the business while developing future-ready skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
The AI-Powered Productivity apprenticeship has been instrumental in refining a diverse suite of technical and interpersonal competencies. I have progressed from foundational prompt engineering to understanding complex data management, including data cleansing, accuracy, and rigorous backup protocols. My technical acumen now extends into the critical realms of Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), Information security and agentic engineering. I have developed a React application integrating ONS and jobs aggregator APIs within Gemini to generate talent intelligence for hard-to-fill vacancies.
Simultaneously, my soft skills have seen significant advancement through structured project management and training needs analysis. I have successfully translated data into actionable reporting, using these insights to influence senior stakeholders and deliver impactful training sessions. Refined communication strategies have enabled me to bridge the gap between technical frameworks and human-centric solutions, fostering a more collaborative and informed environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship is exceptionally well-structured, characterised by a logical flow that seamlessly connects theory to practical application. Each module begins with a comprehensive introductory workshop, where coaches provide a thorough walkthrough of the subject matter. These sessions are essential, as they establish a clear roadmap for the topic and define exactly what is required for our project submissions. By pre-booking these sessions in our calendars, the programme team ensures we can balance our learning commitments with our daily roles.
Following the initial workshops, the structure supports a blend of asynchronous learning and targeted wrap-up sessions. These concluding meetings are invaluable for clarifying complex concepts and refining our approach to final assessments. This organised cadence provides a predictable and supportive framework, allowing me to manage my workload effectively. The clear-cut guidance from coaches ensures that every learner understands the expectations, resulting in a disciplined and highly engaging educational experience that empowers us to succeed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive exceptional support from both my People Manager and Senior Manager, who are instrumental in my apprenticeship success. They proactively make allowances during project submission periods, ensuring I have the necessary capacity to focus on my academic requirements. Beyond mere flexibility, they provide me with substantial, "meaty" projects that allow me to apply my learning directly to my everyday role. This practical application has been a catalyst for my transformation from an introvert to a proactive contributor, as they consistently encourage me to share fresh ideas and innovative AI tools with the wider team to drive adoption.
The encouragement from the Partnership has fundamentally shifted the nature of my work, which now varies significantly from my pre-Gemini responsibilities. My managers empower me to act as a strategic partner, bridging the gap between new technology and operational excellence. This supportive environment has been incredibly valuable, fostering a sense of belonging and confidence that allows me to contribute to the business’s future-ready vision with conviction.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The support from my training provider is exceptional, combining high-quality asynchronous materials and the Atlas AI tool with a meticulously planned annual calendar. Monthly coaching collaboration sessions provide consistent touchpoints, while the availability of both Technical and Cohort coaches for one-on-one guidance ensures a personalised learning journey.
During a difficult period involving redundancy and personal emergencies, my Cohort coach’s patience was transformative. Despite falling three modules behind, their guidance helped me manage my anxiety and navigate my submissions successfully. Their dedicated mentorship has been truly life-changing.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification has fundamentally elevated my technical proficiency, allowing me to operate with a level of expertise that extends far beyond traditional recruitment boundaries. By mastering data management, reporting, AI, GDPR, and GRC, I have successfully transitioned into a highly strategic recruitment partner. This specialised knowledge enables me to approach complex problems with a data-driven mindset, ensuring that my contributions are both technically sound and ethically compliant. Consequently, I now provide a sophisticated layer of support to my squad, effectively bridging the gap between talent acquisition and advanced technological application.
In practical terms, my squad and manager now rely on me to deliver high-quality outputs, ranging from benchmarking best practices to synthesising complex data into comprehensive reports. Beyond individual tasks, I have championed AI adoption by creating bespoke prompt cheat-sheets for colleagues, encouraging a culture of innovation. This blend of technical execution and peer leadership has enhanced performance.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I am actively engaged in several high-impact initiatives that extend beyond my core recruitment responsibilities. As a member of the Gemini Genie cohort, I act as a representative cascading vital AI product updates to my wider team to foster digital literacy. Furthermore, I contribute technical expertise to the hiring manager sentiment analysis team, providing essential data analysis. This role allows me to apply my apprenticeship learnings in a collaborative environment, helping the Partnership understand internal trends through evidence-based insights.
Beyond technical projects, I am committed to the Partnership’s culture through Diversity, and Faith and Belief initiatives. I also co-create content for our Health and Wellbeing newsletter, promoting positive work-life balance. These activities have built my internal profile while supporting the holistic success of my peers. This multifaceted involvement perfectly reflects our unique "owner" mindset and commitment to community.
