Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

2/5
I am in charge of ensuring that Tenants do not fall into Garage Rent arrears. I have to take the relevant action for this including sending letters to Tenants, phone calls, texts etc. I am also in charge of arranging Tenancy visits for Housing officers by booking appointments in for Council Tenants. I am also in charge of scanning, filing and e-mailing over work too. I am also on phone duty from 9 until 12:30 to answer any questions that people may have.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

1/5
It is fully office based except for Thursdays, when I study at home completing my Apprenticeship. The actual job is very draining and demotivating and there is a lack of recognition from the managers. Most colleagues work from home so this makes me feel isolated from time to time too. I am aiming to see out the remaining 9.5 months but we will see.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

3/5
I have learnt how to answer questions on the phones, send out letters as well as scanning, filing and e-mailing. I had very little online training which was disappointing and not enough measures were put in place to support me from the start.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

2/5
It took 6 weeks to chase up about when my Apprenticeship was starting and now my end date is later, which may mean I am taxed a higher amount and for other expenses due to this.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

2/5
I get told that I am supported every now and then but not much else other than that.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

3/5
Only just started the course

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
Too early to judge

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

1/5
I was told after starting that benefits for Apprentices will be cut back including a free Gym membership and no other benefits have been alerted to me since I started.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Medway Council to a friend?

No

Why?

Poor communication to employees, the working conditions are so insufficient that 9 months worth of refurbishment is about to commence and has not been done since the 1970s. There is no employee motivation and you are treated like an object, with no recognition or gratitude for all the hard work throughout the working week.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Medway Council?

I would say that other departments may be better than the Housing department but overall in terms of employee welfare, avoid.
